This is really two questions:

I have HOMM 3 and want to know the best way to do online multiplayer in 2020. Gameranger no longer works with GOG's version (homm3 complete), correct? There's been different solutions in different years on this forum... what is the most current?

And same question for HOMM 5. Does it work on gameranger? if not, then what's the best way to do online multiplayer in 2020?

Incorrect, it worked and it is still working. All players must have the same game version to avoid problems.

Probably the best solution is to install Horn of The Abyss mod and play its online lobby FOR FREE. HD Mod also allows to do it, but you have to pay for lobby feature.
