I saw another post about a challenging new MMO called Pantheon and it inspired me to write this :

If you want a challenging MMO, you should give Ryzom a shot, people compare it to SWG (original flavour), no real quests with loot rewards, no "loot" drops, all you can do for equipment is kill mobs for their bones/skin/teeth etc. or dig materials out of the ground like bark/oil/wood etc. to make armour and weapons.

4 continents, Fyros (desert), Zora (kinda Russian feel, spring thaw, but covered in snow in winter), Tryker (all lakes) and Matis (kinda like England I guess, temperate climate) and Prime Roots (a very high level underground area that has the best materials for equipment). The game has seasons which also affects what materials you can harvest and its animals migrate to different areas and have an eco system where the carnivore (aggro mobs) feed of the herbivores.

There is opt in/out PVP, where you can battle for the control of Outposts, or battle over harvest materials when the super materials rise to the surface to be harvested.

The spells are pretty awesome to look at, hard to believe it was released in 2004 tbh.

There are no classes, your character can be anything and everything, its actually advantageous to mix your skills, get more HP as a warrior and use your HP to fuel your mage spells, As well as Sap (mana), you can mix your spells and edit them to use casting time, range and your actual blood to effect what they will be like.

It has a small but loyal and pretty vibrant community. Its €7.95 per month sub, but you can play up to Lv 125 for free. That's lv 125 in every skill, so eg. you can play and get your Harvest, Melee ( each skill is separate) sword, 2h sword, pike, axe, daggers etc. Magic (each skill is separate) Heal, Elemental, Affliction, Crafting, all up to lv 125 before you have to think about paying.

Interesting, I should probably install Ryzom again. Last I tried it was a few years ago and the trial was time-limited and much more restricted.

The servers have all merged now so its quite an international population, there is a slight difference between free trial and subscription insofar as, if you have a "sub" you account characters have constant experience catalyzers, if you remember them. If you are not subbed, you can aquire them via quests or from guilds, you don't necessarily have to be a member to get those either.

There are some new additions to the game, where you could always do fame missions for kami and karavan, now you can do fame missions for your civilization, this influences certain aspects of the game, which allows you to use a new form of travel, separate from TP's and it also significantly increases the rewards you get from a new thing called Occupations.

One thing to remember, if you do "sub", you cant play that account without a sub again, so make sure to stick with a free trial account if you are uncertain about continuing.
