I also say it's a very good game. Linear, yes, but very enjoyable, with a fluid gameplay and breathtaking scenes.
As for spending points, first you'll have to specialize, but later on, you'll probably have more skill points than you can spend if you specialize too much, so you can be quite a bit more liberal in spreading them out, even if you push out a skill or to to level 15 (it's possible after a certain point in game).
And yes, it was a good decision for you to get DKS - not only does it contain the whole story along with many cool features, Ego Draconis in itself was at times so hard it wasn't even fun anymore. DKS fixes that.

senbon: I just wish it was possible to buy the soundtrack somewhere :( emailed Larian about it and it doesn't seem like they are releasing it for european customers any time soon (publisher seems to be the issue from what I could hear).
but hey - the soudntrack is actually a part of the dragon knight saga package!!

Or you can get it from composer's page. (right panel)

Wow, thanks alot!

(@ Oslin, doesn't seem like the digital version I bought has it. Maybe retail? I do know for a fact that the american version comes with the soundtrack atleast.)
Just a heads up, evern though DKS is on the 360, the game does not support the 360 controller, you will need to use XPADDER or something like that.

If you find the Mouse/KB awkward, try a 360 controller (with XPADDER), it makes the game much more manageable.

Big LO fan here too :)
comparing divinity 1 and divinity 2 is like trying to compare the Witcher 1 & 2.

same series, way different games ... despite also being of the same general genre.

the main advice I can give to anyone who is interested in Divinity 2 is: FINISH THE STARTER AREA!

it sucks ass and is pretty bland, but slog through it! Don't quit until after you have given the game a fair shake, unfortunately you cant do that until you walk into the first town after you get back on the air ship.

seriously, that first starter area is quite possibly the games weakest link, just get your damned powers and move on to the actual game.
