jjsimp: I haven't finished reading the thread, but this goes way back. Don't forget that cinematic arcade game with the stupid knight I think his name was Dirk, Dragon's Lair. With that game you pushed the button or the controller at the right time. I never understood what the draw of that game was.
The graphics and the music. As a kid, I didn't like Dragon's Lair as much as I liked
Space Ace, but really, the only allurument to play it was to "play" a game that looked and sounded so much better than any other games around, even though I realized at the same time that the gameplay part is lacking. Heck, when you put in some quarters into Space Ace, even some chicks might gather around to watch you play it, asking "Wow! Are you really playing that? It is like a movie!". That was at a time when other games looked and sounded like
this, at best (which was quite fine, but still a far cry from the levels of Space Ace).
Same for
Creature Shock, at the time it was a real feast to your eyes (and ears) that you couldn't get in more advanced games, even though Doom was already around. Overall as games I liked e.g. Doom 1-2 and Ultima Underworld 1-2 more than Creature Shock, but still I enjoyed CS for the more advanced audiovisuals.
But at the same time, I remember hoping that other "real games" would have as advanced audiovisuals as Space Ace or Creature Shock. And nowadays we pretty much have that, without having to skimp on the gameplay part. But it appears games like Ryse still try to do that. Not because those advanced graphics and sounds could not exist with a more advanced gameplay, but because the developers feel many people want simplified gameplay and less challenge from their games.
As if people who are currently playing God of War games now are thinking "Yeah this is nice and all, I just hope the gameplay was easier and simpler...".
Maybe they are right, what do I know. But my point is that the pull with Dragon's Lair etc. was not the lack of gameplay, so they were different from what Ryse is apparently trying to be.
