dyscode: It wasn´t the closed system that brought the Amiga down, it was maybe the 1st and ultimate victim of piracy. So no one wanted to develop for it anymore.
Agreed some late decision at Commodore did not help either but piracy finished it off.
Also essentially Amiga was UNIX/BSD based. So that´s not the point.
Apple was a similar a closed product by the time also. But the market was less gamer and more professionals & businesses. Who could actually afford it.

tejozaszaszas: Are you really sure that a closed system was not a factor against them?. The gaming industry is a hightly competitive sector that requires hight tecnical improvements. On a open plattform like PC Cyrix and Intel developed awesome processors, Creative awesome sound cards, S3 great graphic cards... A company can´t be a leading one in every aspect. So the old gaming computers were replaced by modern consoles, a simple system oriented only for gaming.
Maybe I´m mistaken but I think Amiga OS is not a Unix based one. Later, at 1990 (not sure), they introduced a Unix based one called Amix, but software developed under Amiga OS were not compatible. Don´t blame me if I´m mistaken, I was only ten years old, so can´t be totally sure.
I didn´t say the closes system wasn´t a factor :) and that Commodore Marketing didn´t some pretty stupid things. But what do you call the Amiga 2000 / 3000/ 4000?

The where with expendable slots for Graphicboards, the famous Lightwave-Render cards, CPU upgrades etc. There was even a Amiga 2000 UNIX server in production.
And the Amiga had a pretty big dent in TV production back (Live overlays and Babylon 5 TV series. etc).

But piracy was the last nail in coffin. Back then maybe 1993 or so, a lot of game companies said the will close monitor their latest products. If it does not sell enough they will abandon the platform. e.g. Factor 5 (Turrican 3) was one of those Companies. After they saw how much money their games earned from the Megadrive sales. And it wasn´t that the Amiga market wasn´t big enough.

When Commodore finally got their brains together and released the CD32 (1993) it was too much ahead of it´s time and too late to safe Commodore. So it failed in 1994. Essentially the CD32 could have been the Sony PSX which was was the `new type´ console that changed ´the game´ in 1995, then.
At least that was how I experienced it all.

I used my Amiga 1200 with expansionslot board and 68060/50Mhz CPU upgrade until 1999, then I got a PowerMac because I hated Windows 98 for all it´s worth.
It worked so opposite to the ´Aimga experience´for me. And Mac was the closest next thing.
And I still have my A1200 and A2000 stored away safely.

I miss them so much, still. cheers! :D
