it's officially h1n1, not swine flu.

H1N1 is the subtype of influenza, while Swine Flu is the general name used for the particular strain we're currently seeing. There have been many, many different strains of the H1N1 subtype throughout recent history, some quite severe (such as the Spanish Flu), while most aren't even worth mentioning (strains of the H1N1 subtype are responsible for around 50% of all flu cases each year).

The WHO just recently decided to stop calling it Swine Flu to try to prevent people from doing stupid things, like some folks in Egypt slaughtering thousands of pigs. Whether the general public and the media decide to stop calling it such remains to be seen (not likely, in my opinion). What the actual scientific designation of this strain is I don't know, probably just a numerical string. Calling it H1N1 influenza, while technically correct in a very general sense, is a very imprecise and sloppy term scientifically speaking, as that name describes equally the current virus people are concerned about, the 1918 Spanish Flu, as well as thousands of other strains that are of no interest whatsoever.

Surely it makes little difference what you call it, the media have gone with "swine flu" and thats how it will stay. It makes for better headlines.

I hear the Swine Flu has now arrived in Norway, however it's stuck at the arrivals terminal waiting for the luggage.

I heard on the news (as I walked by a TV) that 2 people in sydney are being treated for what might be swine flu. Suppose I'd better start panicking. Which terrified scream sounds better?
