As our catalog gets bigger and better every week, it's easy to lose track of some of the awesome games that we have to offer. We've been running one day "Gaming Gem" promos for a while now to highlight some classic titles that don't get the love of some of our best-known blockbusters like Baldur's Gate or Duke Nukem 3D. To celebrate summer, for the next two weeks until July 25th, we're going to run a Gaming Gem promo every day, so you can rediscover these lesser-known classics! Grab that plastic toy shovel and dig out gem after gem over the next 18 days. We think every game we're going to be offering on our Summer GOG.com Gem Extravaganza will be an excellent title, and we hope you give them all a try.

World War II history freaks, get your monies ready! We have something especially for you on the plate today. If you’re a bit tired of reading about the biggest conflict in the history of humanity, why not recreate it on our PC and not harm anyone? In [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/strategic_command_european_theater]Strategic Command: European Theater instead of being a cog of the war machine, you look at the big picture managing armies, negotiating politics, and making all the strategic decisions. It’s a very complex and detailed representation of a table top wargame, where you as the supreme commander of either Allies or Axis forces play through six campaigns from the very beginning of the conflict till its last days. Although this seems to be a game only appealing to “grognards”, the AI lets less advanced gamers play and enjoy the game. With multiplayer options allowing to play over Internet, hot-seat or the old school way “Play By Email”, the ones looking for a bigger challenge will find something for themselves as well.

Strategic Command: European Theater is 60% off for the next 24 hours and can be yours for only $3.99. Get it until tomorrow, July 25 at 5:59 a.m. EDT (9:59 a.m. GMT). If you already own this title or it’s just not your type of game, be sure to check back tomorrow for the last Summer Gem Promo!

jdiamant2: I think tomorrow is the last gem. What's it gonna be?
Well we started with Sanitarium right? Not really a hidden gem per se, so maybe we will end with how about Two Worlds another 9.99 not so hidden game, or maybe they will put the Witcher 2 on a sale? That would be a little twist nobody expects now wouldn't it? Okay, I don't think that is going to happen either (in this sale..soon though)...We will see my friend, we will see. :)
Hmm, I'm not sure about this one. I love turn based strategy, particularly stuff like HOMM and Disciples. I'm also a big fan of history. However, I've never really tried wargames before. Even $4 seems like a lot just to try and determine if this is my type of game. Is this a good game for an entry level wargamer and does it have much longetivity?

ShogunDarius: I cant really be the only person on gog who has played the romance of the three kingdom games? i just want to know if this game is similar or not in play style, i refer to the older games btw
I've played RTK 2,3,4,5,6, and 11. Love the history period of RTK.
I bought this game thinking that it's like a turn-based Hearts of Iron.
Does this game have "hotseat" mode? Also, how long does it take to complete a campagin?
There have been more than half a dozen strategy games since the sale began. How about a few rpgs now, GOG?....I am looking at you 'vampire the masquerade:redemption'.

Then play a free one.
Matrix Games has quality wargames but I don't know if they have a free one suitable for beginners. You could ask on their forums.
Some other publisher must have a free game suitable for beginners. There are amateur games as well. Maybe check some freeware site or something.
Or maybe try the demo of an old commercial game like "the operational art of war".

What I'd call proper wargames are essentially boardgames. And pretty technical, unfun boardgames at that. They're unlike computer games, even turn-based strategy games. It takes some effort to get into them.
But I don't know if that particular game is a proper wargame. It looks like one.

Perhaps a bastardized tactical wargame such as Steel Pathers could be a decent, somewhat fun introduction. Matrix Games has a free version and there's at least one amateur version out there.
Tactical games play differently than operational and strategic ones however. If you're interested in strategies and manoeuvers but not in tactics and military gear, give tactical games a pass.

Hotseat and pbem are included.

Zolgar: Actually looks like it has potential.. I can't quite tell if it looks fun, or boring. >.>

Now to decide if my bank account will forgive me for buying yet another game. ;)
If you're really interested in buying the game, why not take my gift copy? That way, it won't go to waste.

Sure. :)

With me a game never goes to waste, it might take a little while for me to get to it, but even dogs and boring games get their turn on the Blog! :)

And I do love tactical games, especially those that give me the time to actually be tactical. Even if I lose a lot!
