<i>Today is the last day for our Hidden Gems Summer Extravaganza! To celebrate today's hidden gem, we're adding soundtracks, artworks, wallpapers, and a reference card to [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/independence_war_deluxe]Independence War Deluxe's bonus content. We've also added soundtracks to Independence War 2's bonus materials today. Pick that game up while you're at it for double the rockin' soundtrack awesomeness.

As our catalog gets bigger and better every week, it's easy to lose track of some of the awesome games that we have to offer. We've been running one day "Gaming Gem" promos for a while now to highlight some classic titles that don't get the love of some of our best-known blockbusters like Baldur's Gate or Duke Nukem 3D. We think every game we're going to be offering on our Summer GOG.com Gem Extravaganza will be an excellent title, and we hope you give them all a try.

Dear Smartypants McAdviceColumnist;

I am looking to pursue a career as a commander of an interstellar dreadnought. What should I do to train myself in preparation? I am 12.

--Starstruck

P.S.
What did you do to make your mother hate you so much she named you "Smartypants McAdviceColumnist"?

Dear Starstruck;

The studious youth looking to command a space ship across the interstellar lanes of space is probably doomed to a life of bitter disappointment and alcoholism, but with that proviso in place I would recommend that you investigate sophisticated simulations like such as "Independence War Deluxe". With Newtonian physics and a realistic flight model, this simulation brings a level of realism unseen in the space fighter sim market. As it turns out, controlling a wallowing space turkey armed to the teeth with particle beams is a more complicated endeavor than flying around in your space superiority fighter, and the skills you would learn from this game would prepare you well for your career.

Although horrible little children who mock others' names are more likely to find themselves in dull jobs like "Xeno-Accountant" or "Spacesuit Protein Spill Recovery Expert".

A complex storyline and branching mission structure combine with respectable graphics and a UI that helps make sense of the intricate issues that a space commander would need to balance help even terrible people like you feel in command of their hollow lives or, at least, the simulation.

Basically, I am suggesting that you pick up Independence War Deluxe for just $2.39, as the happy times that you spend pretending that you have a future will soon be eclipsed by the bleak despair of a grey and dull life wasted.

Best of Luck, Starstruck!

I'm sad that there was nothing on sale that I was interested in but I still thought it was an brilliant sale. :)
Reminds me of those days past playing Allegiance at alleg.net.
I think I'll pick it up if it turns out to work on Win7 64bit..
it runs just fine on my netbook with windows 7 starter 32bit. I dont know bout 64 but hopefully this is helpful to some.
Is this game good? Is it like Freespace 1? I'm just asking, I don't have money for it anyway.

Sweeet, thanks! According to the game's forum it looks like there's a bit of a hit-or-miss involved but for 2 bucks, I'm willing to take the risk for an awesome-looking game.

Final tally during the promo:
Earth 2150
Freedom Force: 3rd Reich
Enclave
Lords of the Realm
Ground Control
Dark Reign
Independence War

+Conquest of the New World, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Fallout 1&2 during Interplay promo

These're gonna last me months and months and months :D
Thanks GOG!

P.S.
A HoMM1 and Witcher promo soon would be great!

Its nothing like Freespace, other than the setting. I could never get into it back in the day... Too much time playing Freespace & Wing Commander. I can tell its a great game, but adjusting to the flight model was cast-iron pain in the behind.

I remember buying this game - and its sequel years back - The intro video's alone were well worth the GOG price.
I'm sitting with my retail box of this pack right now, reading the manual. Memories, memories...

Must-buy for fans of simulators. I'll be buying my digital backup in a few moments =)

I'm not even sure if the cds still work anyway.

hmmm, sounds interesting. Well, maybe another time I will buy this :)
Only two purchases from this sale. Not too bad comparing to the recent Steam sale :(
Great great game from the sadly defunct Particle Systems (yay for UK company). It was a tough game but great, it was sim-y in that you couldn't simply through it around like an Xwing, physics played a part and made it more interesting (and really nothing more fun that setting course, flipping the ship over while carrying on course and blasting the heck out of your opponents)

I highly recommend this at the normal price, never mind the $2.39 steal. Esp, as Gonadius notes, the cinematics are great. (and considering the time the game was released they are phenomenal, they didn't skimp)

ShogunDarius: not stated win 7 support, darn i wont take anymore risks, but thanks for the sales
It works in Win 7 32 bit for me, there is a problem where sometimes the mouse gets a little funky (gets offset relative to the screen so that you can't go to the lower right hand corner), but that's doesn't happen if you cut the intro and opening screens short or use the executable that goes right to the main screen of the game. The intro itself as others have stated here is almost worth the $2.39 itself! :)

but the opening i so pretty...off to youtube to watch again

and this is for those on the fence http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7AsRQXOUSY
I missed out on sanitarium and freedom force : (

Sanitarium was probably the best gem on offer in this sale...
Already have this too, but thanks for the extra bonus content :)
It is kind of funny to see that more people wished that they had bought Sanitarium on offer , I do as well - but I had bought from more "summer sales"/"Promos" (GOG, Steam and so on) so I had really OVERspent and needed to cut back on the spending (I also were tempted a lot by the URU chronicles offer but I think I got URU on disc somewhere).
Also it is kind of funny how we gets caught up in these sales and buys a lot of stuff that we might never play . I normally never play flight shooters (The only one I can remember ever really having played were some Starwars game, I think that it were back when I had an "old" 80386 - 40MHZ computer (The 80486DX2-66MHZ where already out back then...)(Also I remember having to use some "double space" or "drive space" function on one of my "petite harddrives" because I did not have enough drive space) but hey! - here people are talking about how this is a great game + it got nice reviews and it is 'only' $2.39 so I bought it anyway.... So if one does not buy then one might sit later and wish that one had taken the nice offer and if one does buy... well - who knows if it is ever going to be played.....

P.S.
Just read this interesting piece on Wikipedia (they kept making 80386 chips until 2007 - I had heard stories earlier that very old type CPUs were still used in aerospace technology and had been used - like the 8086 - but I had no idea that they had been using 80386 chips in phones too) (Perhaps the world is still producing and using 80386 derivatives ?, or other rather old PC CPUs or derivatives there of ) :

In May 2006, Intel announced that 80386 production would stop at the end of September 2007. Although it had long been obsolete as a personal computer CPU, Intel and others had continued making the chip for embedded systems. Such systems using an 80386 or one of many derivatives are common in aerospace technology, among others. Some mobile phones also used the 80386 processor, such as the BlackBerry 950.
