As our catalog gets bigger and better every week, it's easy to lose track of some of the awesome games that we have to offer. We've been running one day "Gaming Gem" promos for a while now to highlight some classic titles that don't get the love of some of our best-known blockbusters like Baldur's Gate or Duke Nukem 3D. To celebrate summer, for the next two weeks until July 25th, we're going to run a Gaming Gem promo every day, so you can rediscover these lesser-known classics! Grab that plastic toy shovel and dig out gem after gem over the next 18 days. We think every game we're going to be offering on our Summer GOG.com Gem Extravaganza will be an excellent title, and we hope you give them all a try.

Today we have uncovered a hardcore RTS hidden gem ;) [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/dark_reign_expansion]Dark Reign + Expansions is really the true, real RTS you’d want to play. A lot of innovative features were so hardcore that the modern games of today are using the pseudocasual counterparts.

First and foremost the whole setting, the new Hard Sci-Fi world that was created for Dark Reign is unique. You are the lone survivor of the Tograns, a human faction whose homeworld was devoured by a brutal civil war between the Freedom Guard and the Imperium. Now you have to be victorious in battle simulations of some of the famous battles between those two. If you prove yourself, you’ll get a chance to use an advanced probe launcher to go back in time and save the Togran’s leader and scientist Alpheus Togra, thus saving the whole civilization. The expansion pack adds a second campaign involving the Imperium, a rogue AI, and a secret research facility ;)

Dark Reign is full of innovations, it’s the one of the first RTS games to use fully 3D models and terrain that impact physics and damage. Fast paced action obliged the design team to drop the Fog of War system and implemented a Line of Sight that changes with the terrain elevation and the landscape. The two sides are totally heterogeneous in terms of design and units, and speaking of the units. To minimise micro-management which can be a chore with this many units and fast paced RTS action a new system was implemented, you can set the general attitude of your individual units. This regulates their rules of engagement and eagerness to fight. Top that with a simple and reliable waypoint system and you get the picture of how deep the gameplay is. All of that is driven by one of the best soundtracks in the history of RTS.

Buy it now only for $3.99 today and check out one of the best RTS games of all time!

I've gone broke two days ago :D

It doesn't really matter, I rather give games to someone who needs them, than buy to myself. I've been like this for a long time, maybe I have some sort of mental illness :)

And it feels nice to be part of this great community :)

KOC: I am amazed that every time I go to visit GOG.com I see generous people giving away games to others. What an amazing community, you are all wonderful people :)

If only the rest of the Internet were like this ...

That's all I wanted to say. Oh yeah, and this looks like a nice RTS also. I'm not sure if I ever even heard of it before so it suits the 'hidden gem' category nicely :)
Indeed. It's certainly not something you see often on the internet (or even in real life these days), and the generosity of users like KneeTheCap is really quite inspiring, especially in the selflessness apparent in it.

However, on the flip side, I do find the vulture mentality that's developing as a result here to be quite disturbing. Over the past few weeks I've come on GOG to see new release or offer threads started off with a code and followed by numerous complaints that other people were too fast. The image it evokes is that of aid companies trying to keep up with starving third-world people scrambling for corn. Honestly people - if you can't afford a measly four bucks (or in some cases $2.39), then gaming should be the least of your worries.

Anyway back to topic - decided to get this because I have a budget German copy which is missing the music tracks and the German translation is appalling :) Thanks GOG!

Nice series, will pass this time because I already have the retail version of this game, including the expansion, but is a good game for RTS fans.
Great rts that is worth every penny even at full price. Pity modern rts are nothing like this.

You don't say. That's why I mostly prefer running contests to giveaways. At least there is more fun from them than just 'pick me, pick me' posts :)

As for today's gem...
<sigh>
RTS. No deal :(

I give codes away because I want people to be happy, give away some joy. I've always enjoyed giving gifts, since I didn't really get any when I was a kid. So maybe it's just a soft spot for me, even though I might be easily exploitable :)

Would it be better if I give codes in a contest in the future?
Already got this game boxed (somewhere) but can't remember if I have the expansion.
Anyway , I played this game years ago and liked it a lot so I am buying the GOG version too.

Yes, please.

To be honest, I occasionally whine a bit. :P This has led to people gifting me games privately, which is fairly great. I'm very very thankful to them for that.

But I'm really not the one in most need of a free game around these virtual lands. And I've been quite honest with this too.

Anyway, as long as you're happy with yourself, KneeTheCap, you're ok. Don't worry about how you're giving away games. It is, afteall, your choice.
