Steam hunts down all upcoming AAA titles, and make ? force ? them to use Steamworks
Great. Now apparently people in Japan aren't allowed to buy any version of Oblivion or Fallout 3 GOTY edition on Steam. Despite the fact that both could be bought yesterday. It's 2K all over again.

Catshade:
Their range of older titles is not very impressive. Furthermore, some of them are not properly tested and simply do not work with some systems (WinXP, 95, etc.), not to mention being forced to install the Steam client and the fact that while playing you need to have Internet access for pretty much the whole time. By the way, if Steam is ever shut down for any reason then this is the end, all purchased games no longer work.

bansama: But that is so true. many of the games sold here, that are also sold on Steam, simply do not work correctly when bought from Steam. Take the Commandos games, I don't think the Steam versions have ever been fixed to work on modern systems -- the number of complaints about not being able to save or the games simply running too fast were numerous if I remember correctly. And then there's the whole Earth 2160 (if I remember the year correctly) and the JA2 UB fiascoes.

Commandos Ammo Pack i bought on GOG did not work properly on my system (xp, 32bit) until i found temporary solution from elsewhere. i'm not trying to defend Steam or anything, just saying.

What's the problem on your system?
I own Commandos too and it is working ok for me, xp sp2 32bits.

Did you contact GOG support? They tend to be good at helping to solve such problems. Unlike Steam who will tell you to contact the publisher.

bansama: I don't think that do it on a regular basis =).
On another note, once again GamersGate have done something good. They've now confirmed that you can indeed buy EA games worldwide from their co.uk site.

I asked the same question to their Twitter account too. The odd thing is that they claim that they can't sell EA games to South America from their regular site but I bought Mass Effect 2 without problems unlike DA:O that appears as not priced for my region and doesn't let me add it to my cart. Both appear available from the UK site though.

OmegaX: *snip*

Yeah, ME2 seems to be the exception in terms of the .com site.

OK then if it is working now, but e-mail the support and explain for them what was your problem and what was your fix. This way they may update the game installer.
(And just a reminder, the first Commandos game was buggy for me even back in 1998,9. The expansion was much more polished, so if it isn't just a codec problem maybe it is the game's own fault, not gog.)
Though for me it is 100% OK, awesome game.
Predictably, Steam fans are enraged reading GOG's comment about Steam.
I love Steam, actually, since it easily allows me to find and purchase games and has really nice integrated community features (even with quite a few games not bought and downloaded through Steam). It's never been an inconvience for me and I don't see why people get so upset about it. If you've had an unpleasent experience or just disagree with it because of principles than that's fine. Don't use it and instead use GOG.com, Greenhouse (which is pretty awesome, by the way, check it out at http://www.playgreenhouse.com/), etc.

Thanks for the link - its nice to see the support for Mac and Linux. Limited selection of indie games at mostly $19.99.

Greenhouse is practically dead by now; No new games, no update, nothing new at all. And they also have one-time online authentication for all their games, right? 'Awesome', it is not.

If you want Mac games, Gamersgate also has a decent selection of Mac games.

Unfortunately Greenhouse seems to be mostly abandoned at this point. The last new game added was something like 6+ months ago, and there have also been a fair amount of community complaints over patches for the Greenhouse versions of the games not keeping pace with the availability of patches for other versions.
I have Greenhouse for one game, Multiwinia, and I must say, that place sucks now.
