Fred_DM: all the big publishing houses, which could easily afford to set up their own digital client, are present on Steam as well: Activision, UbiSoft, THQ, 2K Games. it's only EA that thinks they should have their own client.
that's a dangerous development because if Origin takes off, i'm willing to bet that Activision, UbiSoft and THQ would follow suit with their own client. they always copy each other anyway.
Umm Blizzard can and did set up their own crap a long time ago. No one every notices or counts it, but EA isn't the first.

StingingVelvet: Ubisoft and EA both have their own services and tie your games to them, Uplay and Origin respectively. Activision has battle.net for Blizzard games and will almost surely expand it to cover their other titles. 2K and THQ have other priorities right now like getting profitable, so they use Steamworks.
