Aliasalpha: That said, as much as the modern version is pretty and fancier, it still suffers from the flawed game design philosophy the original had, being a direct descendant of the coin vaccuum arcade machine where fun was equal to killing you regularly so you'd put more money in the machine

You've got infinite continues, and you can grind lives if the three you get by default aren't enough. Levels only take a couple of minutes to play through, so you don't have a lot to replay even if you fail. (Except for the Albatross, that one's a proper bastard) Heck, I don't think I ever failed a level on my first playthrough (except for the Albatross) on Normal. And if you find things too difficult, there's always Easy mode with helper blocks and whatnot.
The lives are one of the main problems I have, whats the point of making them limited only to give you unlimited continues?
that was my exact feeling with castlevania.
once i got it in mame i couldn't understand why i didn't play through the whole game in 1 go on an arcade machine.
same with house of the dead 3 , once you play it on computer you just don't die anymore.
So yes the lives are quite obsolete.
Tex Murphy. The hint system (which essentially scales difficulty as needed) was waaaay ahead of its time (I never really used it though). Makes it one of the least frustrating adventures ever, design-wise.
Ditto on BS2. Broken Sword 2 looks absolutely gorgeous.
Broken Sword 2/3 hold up very well. I think the ultimate game that holds up well, and will continue to forever (but isn't on here) is Tetris. 50 years from now, people will still be playing Tetris.
max nostalgia? Star control 2 and Lands of Lore

Blarg: Man this thread reminds me how much I wish GOG had X-COM: UFO Defense and Heroes of Might and Magic 2. I dunno about mods and communities for them, though. But X-COM does have some versions people have put together on their own in an attempt to carry on the tradition, and some are supposedly quite good and can even be played multiplayer.

Whiteblade999: Not GoG but, http://store.steampowered.com/app/7760/. Unlike other steam games it uses dosbox and is NOT tied to steam if you just click the .bat files yourself.

Can you explain "clicking the .bat files yourself"? I know the .bat extension is for executing batch files, but I don't know how Steam installs things or which .bat file you mean. Do you mean something like an install.bat or setup.bat file, or more of a play.bat file? In other words, do you mean I should find some way of installing it myself to avoid having Steam phone home?
My internet at home is sometimes unreliable (it's out now, for instance -- I'm typing from work) and it would irritate me to buy the game, do the wrong thing, and then be unable to play it.
This is what I did for it so the steam version is probably different in the way it open and closes. I'll put some instructions for you.
1)First make a .bat file named xcom.bat (it just needs to be .bat but its easy to find this way) and put inside the file ".\xcom\dosbox .\xcom\xcom.bat -fullscreen -exit
exit"
2)Put the .bat file right outside of the main folder so it should look like the attached
3)See attached for what the main folder looks like.
4)Click on xcom.bat and the game should launch itself and close itself.
Sorry that I wasn't specific enough before.

Ah thanks very much. I think I'll take a chance on getting the game then.

Might as well wonder why you're not invulnerable in every game with a save-anywhere feature.
To answer your question, it's one of the resources you'll have to manage as part of the game. This way you can't zerg rush things and simply throw endless piles of bodies at the enemies and obstacles until you succeed due to blind luck.
But again, it's not as if the limited lives would be an issue on normal and below. The game is quite generous with the health powerups and extra lives.
Unreal
Pop it in and I'm back to when I first played it every time.
