Oh, and cars.
And alcohol.
Seriously. Guns don't kill people (but they sure help :p), people kill people. Well, people and camel spiders.

Edit: Side note: I'm pretty apathetic about whether guns are banned or not. It doesn't really matter to me either way.
Really? The primary purpose of alcohol is not "to injure or kill people"? Pretty sure every liver on the planet would beg to differ. :p
Okay, ban all knives then. What is the purpose of a knife? To cut into the flesh of something.
Ban boxing gloves. No purpose for those other than wailing on each other.
Ban paintball. No purpose for that other than hurting people.
Ban tasers and pepper spray.
Face it, ANYTHING can be used as a weapon. While I fully agree there is no need for civilians to own assault rifles and the like, what about hunting rifles and the like?
There are PLENTY of arguments for banning firearms. But "idiots can hurt themselves" is not one.

The primary purpose of alcohol is to achieve a state of intoxication. Knives have a primary purpose of cutting food. Boxing gloves are used between two consensual people who agree to engage in fisticuffs for the purpose of sport. Paintball guns are the same.
Tasers and pepper spray are in the same boat as guns, although both are far less often lethal.
I know everything CAN be used as a weapon, but the primary purpose of a gun IS to be used as a weapon. There's a difference between incidental and primary purposes.

Did the article say they're not pressing charges? The fuck? He killed his wife! He shouldn't be left around anything that has a sharp point or shoots sharp objects!

if used properly, alcohol is used in moderation to achieve mild drunkenness.
If used properly, a Paintball Gun is between consenting people.
If used properly, a hunting rifle is used on a deer or a bunny.
If used properly, a knife is used on food or rope.
Inherently, alcohol is used to introduce toxins into the body (does alcohol count as a toxin? Whatever the word, it is something that isn't actually good for the body :p)
Inherently, a Paintbal Gun is used to shoot something and leave nasty welts.
Inherently, a hunting rifle is used to shoot something and leave a big hole.
Inherently, a knife is used to cut something (whether it be alive or not)
Anything can be claimed to have a primary purpose of being used for one thing or another. There are people who claim that the primary purpose of religion is brainwashing.
That is why it is best to try to minimize bias. Yes, a firearm is inherently something that can hurt things. But so are countless other things.
Now, your argument is VERY good for mandatory safety instruction and the like (you know, ACTUAL gun control, not just gun banning :p). But for banning of firearms, it is just another case of people shoving their biases down others throats in an attempt to ban the things they don't like.
Food for thought:
If used "properly", violent video games are about having fun and engaging with others.
Inherently, violent video games involve inflicting pain (that is depicted in greater and greater detail every year...) on simulated human beings.
Can you see the parallel here? :p

The nature to possess gun/guns is self defense. The other side to it is forcing ones will over another. 2 dimensions, thats all and is a tool only in this regard. It may be fun to go hunting, but more so is simply a cultural rite of passage, and less functionality. Trouble is in those parts of this country those guns have lost their use. The right to bear arms is self defense from government. Not to install your TV or pop off cause you own it!!
In these times it is less culturally relevant; as ones guns would serve little against some real government takeover, but it is still highly symbolic that they don't try take this right away. It's sad when some states reduce it to a lackadaisical recreational/cultural quality.
This incident should be manslaughter! There's no freak-accident defense of understanding for the coastal, sub/urban communities in the US when driving drunk, or firing your gun irresponsibly leads to the deaths of those around you. You do your time despite your internal suffering! "Bad things happen to good people..." No Sh*t! The small town response in this article is for the birds.

Gun laws or no, this guy is just dumbfoundingly retarded not to realize a metallic projectile, fired at point blank range, at hundreds of meters pr. second, might actually penetrate a fucking drywall.
Wonder what he's thinking right now. I can't decide whether he should be sent to jail for reckless use of a firearm (if you even have laws against that), or if living the rest of his life knowing he shot his wife is enough of a punishment.
Of course, it might just be a deft plan to finally get rid of her, in which case he's getting away with murder in probably the most ingenious way I've ever seen.

I'm still at a loss over the fact that he thought he was going to find a screw for the bullet hole. Maybe plaster on top of a cinder block is tough on your drill, but good god.
They should throw the book at him, on top of him suffering for killing his own wife and rotting in prison they should add something to his sentence along the lines of hanging a new television he had just purchased so sloppily. The only purpose this man serves to the economy is as a customer of crack!! Crystal meth though more likely in his parts.

Yep, this is an important point. I'm all for allowing people to keep hunting rifles and the like. Within reasonable limits, of course.
But handguns are a different matter. Handguns are not made for hunting, they're made for killing people. And they're the problem. Getting rid of handguns would probably halve the amount of gun related crimes each year (and that's a conservative guess). After all, it's not so hard for a criminal to carry a concealed handgun, but it's a lot harder for him to walk around with a hunting rifle without having anyone noticing it.

I certainly do not condone the misuse/abuse of the firearm in this case but as American's we have a Constitutional Right to Bear Arms and the Supreme Court just Upheld it
The unfortunate thing is that it was a Five Four Vote. We are one nut job liberal Judge away from loosing that right.

Yes, god forbid that you lose the right to kill one another like if it were your national sport.
I don't understand what is the obsession of people with owning handguns. At least for me, video games and paint ball are the only occasions when they seem appropriate unless you are a cop or a soldier.
