What about Enclave (sold here on GOG)? I haven't played it in years, though, so I'm not sure and can't speak to quality.

Oh hell yes I think this will be right up your alley. It's like GOW but less button mashy.

Also, do give Die by the Sword a chance. It's not button mashy either; you use the mouse to control the sword, but it fits the bill as a hack-n-slash game.

Demon Stone was the most strangely unimmersive game I've every played; I could look at the screen and see my character beating up the bad guys, but it somehow never felt like I was beating up the bad guys. There wasn't any *impact*, and I know that's vague, but I don't know how else to put it.

It also includes the lines: "You've lost, old man!" "Justice never loses!"

So, no recommendations from me (because hack-and-slash PC games aren't my thing, although I liked Devil May Cry on the console), but another vote for "not impressed by Demon Stone."

Everyone should try Darksiders for sure.

I'd forgotten about this game. I still have the old CD lying around, from the days when you could buy PC games in stores and when store clerks didn't care about age ratings ;)

That game really needs to go up on GOG, and it needs a co-op mode. The 1v1 multiplayer was pretty weak. Other than that, it was a pretty fun hack 'n slash game, though it didn't always pit you against hordes that you merely button mashed through, as too many hack 'n slashers do.

Not to the picky, but God of war & Devil May Cry are often called "spectacle fighters", while hack & slash is a sub-genre of ARPGs (with Diablo being the defining game).

Anyway, have you tried Deathtrap Dungeon? This game was based on an old Fighting Fantasy novel, and was, before it was released, viewed as the future "Tomb Radier killer". Of course, it turned out not to be, Deathtrap Dungeon is far more focused on swordplay and there is less platforming in it.

From the same year, we have Die by the Sword, a rather challenging action game, where one of the games main draws was the fact that you could literally cut the enemies to pieces.

Would Bloodrayne count as hack and slash?

I second Enclave, good mindless hack and slash fun, I boot it up now and then. The only critique may be that the magic classes are a bit overpowered compared to the others.

Been playing Nox recently - quite fun.

Described here as ARPG but really there's very little RPG to it - some chat at the start and end of each level, a few half hearted "quests". Levelling up consists of the words "You have gained a level" appearing every now and then. (Unless I missed the bit where you assign your levelling points in which case I'm doing pretty well without them!)

If you are looking for something EXACTLY like God of War, try out Garshasp, but it's really short, and may piss you off during half of the game since it even took over the horrible camera adjustments like GoW.

Enclave has a multicore processor problem. Be aware you must set processor affinity to get it to run correctly. There are more details on the GOG Enclave sub-forum.
Yeesh, why would you like one and not the other? They're exactly the same game...

Prototype 2 has simply more. The combat seems also a lot more balanced with the variety of enemies. And the sidequests actually are not "RUN FROM A TO B AS FAST AS POSSIBLE".
Prototype 1 always seemed to me be...a chunky klutz. Prototype 2 looks more refined. I can only tell from the Xbox version, can't say if the PC port is buggy as hell.

I've heard they had a lot of refinements, like you will want to use more than just a couple combos, which I consider really important, but every review I read said it was all "better" but merely incremental in nature. I wouldn't think that anyone who really disliked Prototype would like P2 simply based on that.
