An epidemic of violence.

Outlast, a terrifying stealth-based survival horror game with parkour elements, full of sickening insanity and unscrupulous violence, is available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $7.99 for the next 24 hours!

In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now. Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.

Outlast is a first-person perspective horror game, that has you fighting for survival (as in: hiding or running in panic) in a nightmarish mental asylum overrun by hellish maniacs possessed by unnatural bloodlust. Deep and immersive gameplay paired with excellent visuals and competent narrative will make you jump in your seat time after time. The game is full of ideas prominent to the horror genre and makes perfect use of each and every one of them. With a story and characters inspired by actual asylums and cases of criminal insanity, diverse hide or run gameplay with parkour elements, and many gruesome images that one can not simply forget, this title offers one of the most involving and terrifying experiences in the history of gaming. You have been warned.

This evening, you could be facing the greatest fears gaming has to offer, sitting in a dark room on the very edge of your chair, heart racing, with sweaty palms and dry lips, playing Outlast, for only $7.99 on GOG.com! The 60% discount offer lasts only until Thursday, January 30, at 10:59AM GMT.
Nice to see that life proceeds as normal, even though a sale is ongoing.
A bit of normalcy :)
This game is awesome.
Looks interesting but i have stopped buying games just now but may pick this up in the future.
Personally, I'd say this is the best action-horror game since Amnesia. Get it if you have any interest in playing these kinds of games.
Saw the game, did not like it at all. It's basically House of Horrors on rails - cheap "scary face/mutilated body pops out" series of moments, altogether relying on simple scares.

I remember fondly the wonderful psychological horrors like the old Silent Hill games 2 - 4. Those were the games that actually scared me.

I can only quote this for emphasis. I'm very glad to see this.

Yeah, I was surprised to still see a gem promo today too! I've heard really good things about this one but as I have both Pnumbras and the first Amnesia in my backlog already this seems a bit pricy still - I've just spoilt by sale prices and bundles now, I think...

I second what JMich said.

Quick question - is the game heavy on jump scares?
Not really worth more than 8 bucks to be honest. This is an extremely linear game with bad AI that makes stealthy approach, which would have made the experience a lot more interesting, nowhere near as effective as running away. The plot, if you can call it that, is also very generic (experiences on inmates turning wrong...). That's a shame because the atmosphere is truly excellent and is pretty much the only thing that made me want to go on.

there are some yes, especially in the beginning, but the game does not rely on them like Cry of Fear for instance.
Skipping this. I have too many games right now .
Very good GOG! You can multitask well.
I played this last year. It looked quite promising in the beginning, the camera mechanic reminded me of the movie "REC" (or the US remake, "Quarantine"). The game has good atmosphere, well executed scares, and a decent (if generic) story. However, I eventually dropped it when I realized that every bit of significance was scripted, and followed an extremely linear plot. You don't have any freedom at all, and that killed the horror for me.

It's worth the current sale price though, if you get immersed in the atmosphere and don't mind the linearity.

One caveat: When I played it, the game applied a messy "film grain" filter that was impossible to turn off, not even hacking the engine's configuration files worked. This filter degrades the image quality considerably by adding a lot of noise, and it does so in a way that totally ruined immersion for me. When I'm looking straight at a plain wall, I expect to see a plain wall, and not a nauseating whirling mess of pixels intended to simulate the deficiencies of a totally different medium. It's possible that there's a way to turn this off now (I haven't played the game for weeks), but if it isn't, and if you don't like "movie grain" filters, stay clear.

That's good to hear, I strongly dislike horror games (and films) that make heavy use of jump scares, it feels cheap.

Also nice to read the other comments sharing players' experience as I'm still gathering feedback on this one.
