Ugh, I can't believe I completely forgot to mention this here.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/630555339/guncraft-voxel-based-first-person-shooter

Title's obvious where they got inspiration from, but it tends towards modern shooters rather than placing the emphasis on the voxels. The technology however lends players the ability to completely destroy anything with their guns. You can even use helicopters to blow everything into oblivion. I'm not sure if tanks will ever make their way in, though I *think* they've mentioned it somewhere that they're considering it.

Surprisingly, I didn't feel like this was much of a Minecraft mod, and thought the overall concept was really quite cool. My other concern was that this will be MP only, but the developers have plans for a singleplayer campaign too. I hope they go through with that.

There are a few gameplay videos that you guys can check out.

The funding's over, but I just asked the developers if they have any plans to let players continue to pre-order this during its alpha and beta phases. I'm still waiting for their reply.

Looks interesting and gimmicky, but does that equate to fun?
*bloody minded*

Are they expecting to win a lawsuit against Mojang to finance their project ?
I don't have anything particular against this Guncraft project itself, but does it bother anybody else how many of these block-based games popped up out of nowhere since Minecraft has gotten big? Seriously, it's like the artistic creativity took a bit of a nosedive there. It also just strikes me as very lazy. "Hey, guys, let's just copy what's popular this week!"

Just looking at that XBLA Indie list makes me shake my head in wonderment. It's like every other game (or close enough) is like that.

That said, I've bought Minecraft and it just gets a big meh from me. Not bad, but it's nothing special to me. *shrug*

Not only that creative people are extremely rare, but creative contents don't sell very well. It pains me. The way I see it, it has gotten worse since early 2000. And it's not just the multimedia entertainments like video games, TV shows or movies. Just look around you. Look at our "cookie cutter" cars, our food, our drinks etc... Heck, even people have the same tattoos nowadays.

Amen.
Saw that earlier and it looks pretty good although I am still a little hesitant on it but will definitely be keeping an eye on it and if I had the $15 right now I would pledge so I could try the beta

Is Notch suing them for the use of the word "craft" ;-)?

The problem with these "voxel" games is that the blocks are way too big, and then when people take one look at them, they become more inclined to say "meh, dime a dozen". For a game like Guncraft, it would have benefited from having its own style if it hadn't emulated Minecraft's big block appearance. 3079 and Cube World are already shifting away from the Minecraft influences and starting to create their own identity. I really hope Guncraft does this too.

If anything you'd think Blizzard would be the one suing for use of the word "craft", since they shut down FreeCraft all those years ago...
Weren't most early FPSs called "Doom clones"?

Also, is Guncraft much different from Ace of Spades?

Good question. I understand that GC has a wider variety of weapons and has vehicles. Not sure beyond that - I'm not implying anything else, because I really am not sure.

Maybe I'll ask the developers.
Beta keys are distributed to backers today. Has anyone downloaded it?
