benderz: Congrats to the winners, and good luck for all your daily travels guys :-)
Also, thanks to Zookie one more time :-)

TekZero: My current position is 11 miles from my home. But I'm looking to get a job in Maryland which would be much better pay, but 3 1/2 hours away by car.

I'm going to get the job, but I don't know how I'm going to do this.

benderz: I did it in the past, during one year (2h30, 5 hours by car every days). If you want my mind about it, it's very difficult with the time. At the beginning it's OK, but one month after it become using. After 6 month I realized I lost my life. I was at home for eating, shower, sleeping. That's it. I didn't have the choice, needed the job.
But the good thing was I moved to this "far" city, and I'm living in this city yet. I don't work for this company anymore, but I find an other job. Finally it was fine, but I had to change my home.

So, my advice is take your time to take your decision. Think about the difficulty and sacrifices you'll have to do, because you'll lost 7 hours in your car by day or take a place to live and be far of your family and friends.

I don't want to be rude, but I underestimated the sacrifices in the past, and I want you to really know what you'll have to do if you want this job, because I didn't know myself.
Yeah, I feel stuck. Not to go into my personal life, but I'm unemployed and my marriage is suffering because of it. There are no jobs in the area for my chosen career path so I have to look elsewhere. If I get this job, I might need to get an apartment or do something like that.
Congrats to the winners, and thanks again, Zookie!
My daily commute is... a 30 minute walk. Through a park even, so it's actually nice and healthy too. I get coworkers complaining about traffic or how long it took them to catch a bus sometimes and I go "Yeah, I was walking real slowly behind this old guy who wouldn't walk faster, but once I passed him everything went smoothly". :)

Novotnus: But, there is 300 kilometers between my home (the one I co-own) and the place I work. It takes ~5 h by bus to get there :)
One thing I've noticed is that intercity coaches quite consistently average 60 km/h, so 300 km = 300 minutes = five hours. This is nifty but ultimately pretty useless information.

As for my commute, it's so short that I could very easily walk it but so long that I can't remember the last time I didn't commute by bike.

I can understand the problem, it was a similar choice for me. Maybe this city is beautiful and you can go there with your wife ? Or take this job many month to get money quickly and searching another job closer of your location ?
Hopefully you'll find the right solution soon and everything will be fine !

If you can swing the cost, extended-stay hotels give a decent deal. 4 nights at the hotel, 3 at home. Eats into your paycheck but that's going to happen if you drive every day, too. At least this way, you'll have time to scout the area and decide if / where you'd like to move the family.

As one with a traveling job, it's not as bad as it sounds. And it's tons better today than when I started doing this 18 years ago, since communication is sooooo much easier.
Thank you, Zookie! My summer holidays begin tomorrow so this came very conveniently! :-)

2 hours of commute has felt so draining for me that it's hard to imagine your 3 hours. At least I can read/play games on my commute since I don't have to drive. So congrats on getting more hours into your day!
congrats to the winners and to Zookie!

my commute is either two steps from my bed to my desk or a 10 minute walk, so I don't think I'd have won even if I had entered earlier :)

however, it's probably about to get a whole lot longer (though still not enough to win here thankfully)

Zookie: It looks like we have a tie! So both ErekoseDM and RaggieRags are the winners! Sorry about the long commutes, I hope you enjoy the games.
Thanks Zookie!!

i wish i could gaming while commuting like some of you guys.
i just get to fight with my ipod to skip songs or listen to drivel that is Karl Pilkington on my usb drive (all on repeat) ^_^
and keep my eyes open like an owl to not get hypnotized in transit / have some large vehicles merge into me. (i know they want to)

at least there are some great GOGs awaiting me in the time i should be sleeping.
thanks again Zookie for the Wizardy 6+7!!
many +1s
