I played Eve Online for 4 years before finally dropping it, but not for the reason you might think.

Eve Online is too good. Its like crack, and once you get into it and devote time it is very hard to get out.

The actual game is just ok. Immense depth, but also immensely boring and slow. What makes Eve Online incredible is the single shard server, and everything that comes from this. Get involve with a corp, get to know them, and you can end up with friends that will stay with you the entire time you play it.

Very true...

/me goes back to game
I play. Almost exclusively in wormholes. I like the isolation and small gang pvp. The item shop didn't bother me at all, although I wasn't subbed at the time. I have a couple characters. The game has pretty good pvp...it's just very unique and somewhat niche. Once you get used to it though, there are a lot of good, small fights to be had where the winner is the most skilled and tactical.
