yyahoo: Well, I guess my point re: Altzheimer's is you cannot make fun "with" them. It's the same with making fun of people with mental disabilities. If they're laughing at themselves, it's not because they actually get what they're laughing at.
amok: you might be surprised...
No, I don't think I would be surprised... I don't know about your understanding, but I think a lot of people are under the mistaken impression that having Alzheimer's is like forgetting where you put your keys or forgetting your email password. It's not. People completely forget things like friends, family members. They'll lose 20 years of their lives. Maybe in the very, very early stages, an Alzheimer's patient may understand what is happening, but it doesn't last long. After a while, they'll likely no longer even understand that they even have a disease. They'll not understand why they are where they are. Oh, and average life expectancy after diagnosis is 7 years.
yyahoo: BTW, do you have any cancer jokes you can share with us too?
keeveek: No, but I have quite a few about car accident victims, and I was one. If you can't joke about cancer after having one it may only means you don't have enough distance in your life. Also, if you haven't noticed, the first Alzheimer joke in that thread wasn't targeted on anybody. It was general Alzheimer joke. It's a difference when you mock a person with Alzheimer and when you just tell a generic joke about it. Most people I know who've fought cancer were joking about it all the time. It's the distance and coping mechanism many of you should aqcuire.
Ok, how about some AIDS jokes. How about a Down Syndrome joke?
You honestly believe there are no limits to taste in humor?
Regardless, the thing about an Alzheimer's patient is after a short while, they can't joke about themselves anymore.
{sigh} As I said earlier, people like Seth McFarlane have shown me that I am apparently out of the times when it comes to humor. Sorry, I just don't find making fun of others with diseases or disabilities funny. It is most definitely different when they make fun of themselves, but that's not what happens nowadays...
