Jason Bergman, Senior Producer at Bethesda Softworks: Yes. Fallout: New Vegas will fully utilize the Steamworks SDK. This means that retail PC copies will activate via Steam.

I hope they release a version using Impulse::Reactor if it ever comes out.
Well, I'll buy it on sale for no more than $5.

"We made the decision to use Steam after looking at all the various options out there and decided that it provided the best, least intrusive experience for PC gamers. We think you’ll agree"
You think wrongly.

Those are not the only choices available.

Yup, don't forget Tages and GfwL. Or Ubi-DRM! :p

Nobody limits activations anymore...every use of SecuROM I've seen recently either revokes automatically, doesn't have limited activations to begin with, or there's a revoke tool available. Even so, I could easily crack it if there were limited activations. If something's tied to Steam, I'm fucked, and other digital distributors are fucked too. Also SecuROM is no big deal for most people, doesn't cause problems and was largely hyperbolic silliness. :P

Fallout 3 used both SecuROM and GFWL. All they have really done is swap one DRM for another. It can still be played offline as long as Steam can dial home every now and then. I guess we should expect more games to use Steam and to be honest it's not the worst DRM out there. I can live with it, unlike UBIDRM.
"but once the game has activated on Steam, you can throw out the game DVD entirely and just download the game over Steam"
releasing retail version is useless
As a fan of Steam, I like this news.

It's purely for promotional purposes.
But yeah, for me it's pointless to get Steam games at retail.
Everything should use Impulse Reactor forever. The end.

A handful. It's relatively new. Stardock will be promoting the crap out of it and seems ot think it will get a LOT of people on board in the relatively near future.
