TheCheese33: Sounds like it's not my kind of movie, then. I was expecting an action movie, not a detective movie. Though I like many detective movies, I'm not a big fan of this one.

Why'd you think it would be an action film? I agree that it can be very slow, but that doesn't make it bad, I love that movie so much.

The cover has Harrison Ford holding a gun menacingly, the trailers all make it look like an action movie, and when I think Ridley Scott, I think Gladiator.

michaelleung: The Blu-Ray version has all the versions bundled... so you can watch them all and have a different experience.
avatar
TheCheese33: Yes, but do these versions move any FASTER than the Theatrical Version?

Dude have some patience. Its not about action, or detective stuff either (in my opinion, anyway). :P
If you want these things, do not watch Blade Runner.

Syme: Great.... now it's 1 o'clock in the morning and I want to watch it.

Best time. :)

Whoa there, when you think Ridley Scott you should think either Alien or Blade Runner. For me it's Alien. I could see how this movie would be marketed as an action film though.

Wait, he's the guy who made Alien? I love Alien!
TheCheese33 - How old are you? I ask because when I was 15-16 when I first try to watch it, I hated it.
Now, 6 years later after watching the Final Cut HD (720p) I LOVE IT.Amazing atmosphere.
Oh and Final Cut is the best, it has all the positives of all versions and none of the negatives. It is also the version that Ridley Scott wanted - Directors Cut is not his cut, ironically.

now i really want to watch it again... its been so long since i watched it. :-(
I bought the directors cut DVD set (inc. the theatrical one which I've never seen), and then a few months later they release a "final cut" version... pissed me off no end. If I ever upgrade to Blu-Ray I'll get the final cut instead.
Oh and they say the city is based on Middlesbrough... (little North-East England humour for you there!)
Also, with regards to the basis for Red Dwarf, I recently watched Dark Star which surely has to have been an influence. (Bunch of blokes stuck in deep space in a crappy spaceship, hilarity ensues. Mind you, Red Dwarf is far far funnier)

He's made a lot of good movies, not all of them action films:
Legend
Black Rain
Thelma & Louise
G.I. Jane
Black Hawk Down
American Gangster
Hannibal
Kingdom of Heaven
I'm sure there's more, I just can't think of them right now...

I'm 17. Maybe the Final Cut is more up my alley!

TheCheese33: Are the other versions any better than this, or am I just not the kind of person who can enjoy Blade Runner?
Yeah I don't think its your kind of movie from the sound of it. Ridley Scott really drives home the point of atmosphere and symbolism which takes precedence over action. But I think you should still bite the bullet and try to watch it, regardless if for nothing else than for the ability to say that you saw it. ;)
[edit]
On the point of different versions I dont think its going to make any difference. Pace wise they were all pretty much the same to me.

Yeah, they are pretty much the same, I mean the things that changes is just some stuff they say, some minor tuned down violence and some fixed errors. Id say final cut is best for new viewers since its the "final" version :)
It's not going to get any faster. And the cuts aren't all that different according to Scott, it's mainly just the ending and the narration or lack thereof.
It's one of my favorites but I have a tenancy to like slower films.
I like movies that are GOOD. If it was a slow moving movie that I found riveting, I'll stay in my seat. I'm not one of those trigger-happy nutjobs that watches Apocalypse Now every night. Blade Runner = Good. TheCheese33, you should find some time to watch the whole thing. Or I'll strap you to a straitjacket.

Apocalypse now is just as slow as Blade Runner if not slower. Especially the Redux version. And it's a great movie.
