Petrell: But what the hell would Apple do with EA?

Wasn't there talk that EA could easily enter the console market? What if...Apple + EA + new console + EA games exclusives to Apple's console?
Well that could be convenient, I could avoid EA and apple simultaneously.

Petrell: I did not know EA was big player in mobile game development. I would think buying several good mobile game/app studios would be wiser and more effective choise not to mention they would be more innovative than monolithic EA. Also producing crap on their own platform would seem counterproductive.

Ahh they're not but they DO own what may be half the gaming IPs on the planet. Many of those games are classic oldschool titles that would probably be well within the capacity of a PDA phone to run. If apple bought them, they could just dump wii development in favour of iphone development, release a shitload of retro ports and rake in the money from people too impatient to wait for syndicate to appear on GOG.
The thought of Apple and EA together makes me feel filthy. An unappealing sort of filthy.
Like evil wolf eatink evil satanic kitten, da?
Both evil, to be makink more evil.
There are a couple of 'Apple is after X' stories around at the moment. Twitter is another one supposedly on the list.
Aside from more adverts that make me want to throttle the TV, I'm not convinced my thoughts will change much.
This is also just so much extra fuel for the Microsoft vs. Apple vs. Google thing. I would happily see them all perish...
I'd wager if this happened, we'd never see the old games, and DRM would still be the order of the day. Apple historically has been remarkably tight-fisted and backward about their IP, almost more so than MS.

Also known as axis/triad of evil ;) :P

Me too. Damn them for giving me a PC, an Ipod and helping me find things on the web!
;-)
I'd be interested in seeing what Apple would do if they broke into the gaming market.
Although, they pretty much have one of the biggest gaming platform with the iPhone. They could turn EA into a gigantic iPhone development/publishing company.

Of course I mean I dislike the lack of competition... but I think you knew that :P
I also dislike them for really petty reasons, like when the BBC call downloadable radio broadcasts "podcasts" because of the iPod, or when you could say "search" but people say "google"...
If Apple buys EA, that means -- whether we like it or not -- Apple is suddenly the number one game publisher on a Microsoft Windows PC.
And, it means that maybe, the Mac might get a huge influx of games developed for their OS.
Maybe like Blizzard's games, we'll see Hybrid boxed PC-Mac releases of Apple-EA's games. Probably means games will be longer in the cooker for development times, too.

Yeah, if Apple bought EA, I don't think they would abandon the PC. Many people use Apple products on their PCs, so it would be a terrible thing for them to abandon the system. Also, what I would really love is if one day, Apple and Microsoft would set aside their differences and allow every program to work on both Macs and PCs.
Though we all know that will never happen.

michaelleung: But I thought EA was bigger than Apple. Or have I been deluding myself?
avatar
Petrell: EA isn't even in same league as Apple as Apple's Net income exceeds EA's entire yearly revanue by billion USD and Apple has almost 10 times the revanue of EA so financially it's entirely possible. EA's income was also almost half billion in the minus last year (but that may be due to aquisitions).

But what the hell would Apple do with EA? Start making games for Mac? Make Mac ports of every EA Game ever made? EA does sit on massive mountain of IP it have aquired over the years so who knows?

Yeah, they need to find a developer worthy of doing say another System Shock game...
