Liquor before beer - you're in the clear, beer before liquor - makes you sicker.

What Judas said, that's what I've heard too. I didn't know cheap vodka can make you feel worse; I do know, though, that I felt like shit very quickly after consuming some cheap red wine, as compared to more expensive red wine. Strangely, beer also makes me feel more nauseous compared to other types of alcohol. I think it's the bitter taste and fizz that usually gets to me.
Anyway thanks for the information. I didn't know downing water can make you feel better, but now that some of you mention it, I do recall how I've gotten rid of the alcoholic effect faster after gorging on water at times.

Well, the reason your head hurts so damn much when you've had too much booze is because you're dehydrated. Alcohol, contrary to what people say, is not good for when you're feeling "dry." So all those drunks you see in movies and TV who say they need a little something to wet their whistles and then down a whole big bottle of whatever? Total bullshit.
So, yeah, filling up on water as you're drinking other stuff helps keep you from getting dehydrated. Making sure you have a full stomach helps, too, as the food helps absorb the alcohol and keep it from getting dumped into your system too fast.
that whole beer before liquor thing isn't true, people just think it is. It makes absolutely no difference what order you mix alcohol in. But yes, quality of alcohol makes a HUGE difference in how hung over you are the next day. The higher quality alcohols don't really give you a hang-over, but low quality anything will definitely make you feel like crap the next day.
I don't personally get any sicker if I mix alcohols, mostly about the quality and quantity, not type that makes the difference.
But the two main points of hung-over avoidance is drink water and eat something BEFORE you pass out. Alcohol can literally make your body think its starving (munchies!) and also de-hydrates you. Oh, did you know that when you black out, you've drunk so much alcohol that your brain literally cannot make memories? You don't forget, you literally never made the memory to start with. Which also explains why people do STUPID STUPID things while inebriated.

lowyhong: Do you guys take anything for your hangovers? Any home recipe? I'd like to be prepared just in case something this bad happens again next time.

I had lots of hangovers. Only thing that gets rid of it is more bourbon. Wouldn't recommend that one much, though.
Other than that drink less and drink plenty of water in the morning. When you get home from work, - close the blinds and order in pizza. Sweet tea ain't bad either.

If you're nauseous, milk will make the problem much, much worse...

As others have already mentioned dehydration is a major factor in how bad hangovers are, so when drinking heavily water is your friend. Isotonic beverages (such as Gatorade) are also good to drink as they'll also rehydrate you without screwing too much with the levels of various salts and sugars in your system. There's also a genetic basis for susceptibility to hangovers (due to the extent that acetaldehyde dehydrogenase is expressed), so it can sometimes be the case that you're just highly susceptible to feeling like shit after drinking; know your limit. Finally, if you take any painkillers to deal with the symptoms do not take Tylenol or any other acetaminophen containing drugs, as combined with alcohol these drugs carry a serious risk of liver damage.

never take opoids with alcohol. if you're talking about anti-inflammatories, fine, as mentioned but skip tylenol, it can cause liver damage. stick with aspirin. avoid iboprufen, it can cause stomach bleeding. be mindful, many prescription strength dosages of painkillers may include anti-inflammatory and opoids e.g. T3 - Tylenol with Codeine.
You generally shouldn't take painkillers period with alcohol, most of the anti-inflammatories have an increased risk of stomach bleeding or in tylenol's case increased risk of liver damage......
Opoids like Vicodin are much much worse, though. Mixing Central Nervous System Suppresants is a very bad idea.Side effects may include coma and death, More often you'll fall asleep and may black out.
In the future. Just take aspirin. Or sleep it off.

A trick i use is eating chips and drinking water and natural orange juice.
It's a sick combination but usually i'm feeling a lot better after an hour.
Chips restore your salt levels , pure fresh orange juice (preferable with some lemons in it) restore your vitamin an sugar levels.
Also a very good way is try to eat something fat as the oil will help avoiding any more alcohol is absorbed by your stomach/intestins.
After being 8 years in the international beerfestival as a responsable for the building of the place , this trick saved many lives ;)
I drink water before I go to sleep so I don't get hangovers. I suppose that won't help your current situation. A few shots of Jäger should cure what ails ya.
It's been mentioned before but; greasy food and milk.
There's nothing like a solid McDonalds order with a Milkshake "the day after". It also helps if you eat such before going to bed the night before, but it doesn't feel quite as good as when you're having it hungover & hungry.
That being said, I never get headaches even after the worst of drinking bilges, and rarely feel crap the day after. I get comments to this nature often from friends who are worse off and think it's unfair that I'm galopping about seemingly sympton-free after 10-12 hours when they're barely able to keep a conversation going. I guess the "genetic" differences in ability to tolerate alcohol can be great.
You had it easy, at 5:30am I was having an asthma attack, it was too dark to find my inhaler anywhere. When I found it - it was empty.
When I can't breathe a facehugger crawling out of my skull would be more than welcome.
