For me, it was Shelter. I really wanted to like this game, but it was pure torture for my eyes. The game's unique aesthetic appealed to me, but it's washed-out, low-contrast color palette really made my eyes hurt. I was squinting throughout the game! I simply abandoned playing it because of this, which was a real shame.
I would say that those japanese style games where heads are really big. Like world of final fantasy.

Gudadantza: There is nothing lazy in pixel graphics per se as there was nothing lazy in Fantasia or Cinderella or Alice in Wonderland artisan art quality animation over the top compared with the best Pixar movies.

Come on, let's judge each case individually. Forget cliches.
Though to bring your metaphor to bear, there is a such thing as digital destruction. While it has yet to occur (much) in games, there have been a few digital remasters with nothing to bear or could be said to be worse than their original releases. XIII is a rather famous case, the "remaster" eliminating the iconic styling it had.

And it can't be said that adding a blast of bloom did much to upgrade the visuals of Wind Waker.
I found a good example of the "fake pixel art" I dislike so much.

There are a few problems here:

1. It's not very good pixel art to begin with.
2. The rendering resolution is much much higher than the asset resolution.
3. All of the animation is being done skeletally by rotating the pieces of the sprite rather than actual pixel animation.

These three combined produce an effect that is very unpleasant to me. The large pixels of the sprite combined with the high rendering resolution mean that there are a lot of rotated "fake pixels" and I find the entire thing off putting. Does anyone else find that?

Yeah, the deliberately stepped lighting in the original was a nice stylistic choice. The HD version was somewhat bland in comparison.

morolf: Didn't exactly stop me from playing it, but Warcraft 3's cartoon graphics certainly were a factor in me not liking the game all that much. Can't stand this exaggerated cartoon style in games.
I sort of get what you mean. Warcraft III is a great representative of its genre even after all these years, and the cartoony graphics have aged pretty well, but I fail to grasp what tone the franchise is trying to set. There are what I have interpreted as real attempts at a storyline and character development, but they are punctuated by tongue-in-cheek bits, the serious lines are delivered by these muppet characters and the world feels cobbled together by multiple people emphasizing different things, so I find it incredibly difficult to take seriously.

The SpellForce series is objectively worse, but I like it better than Warcraft (well, the first game is a bit crap, but 2 is alright) because the tone feels deliberately camp, which suits the otherwise similar art style.

Hypothetically impressive, but the way it executes just feels like a motion puppet.
