Not sure exactly what types of software you'd be looking to run. I can print from my tablet to my wireless printer, access and write documents, and run games, granted not desktop-performance games.
Also with these tablets that are Android based, you can plug them into your pc and transfer files back and forth.
I get the general concern though, but modern tablets are pretty useful. They're not like tablets from even 5 years ago. :)
