kohlrak: Honestly, i distinctly remember spyro being more cool and edgy for it's time than fun. Then again, last time i played was about the time the originals came out and i was young, so it's quite possible that i just sucked, but, honestly, I remember the game breaking some of what we would, today, refer to as awful sins regarding the artificial creation of difficulty and such.
tfishell: Probably. Maybe devs were still coming off that "arcade mindset", wherein you had to put in artificial difficulty to keep the quarters coming, I don't know. All I know is many games then were harder than they are now, and I'm not "scared" to cheat rather than spend hours trying to beat a single level. (I recently beat Bio Menace and avoided cheating until the last two levels.)
Some games are like this, still, unfortunately. You get the anti-cheat crowd, but then those people turn around and never play the game and say "if you didn't like it normal, you shouldn't have bought it." Honestly, with spyro, i also remember cheats not really helping. Usually spyro has you doing things that are frame-by-frame chances of errors that could force you to start a long process over again, which often left you feeling like you were getting carpal tunnel even at the age of 12 (realistically, just regular hand cramping). A game shouldn't hurt to play. I shouldn't expect needles to pop out of my controller to punish me for loosing.
There's also something to be said about certain RPGs. I thought about trying Agarest, but the reviews warn of the grinding experience. Honestly, I don't feel like fighting with another game that probably has anti-cheat mechanisms so i took their advice on that one.
EDIT: I'm honestly expecting 3D Sonic level gameplay with any remakes of spyro.
