So I own Morrowind at both GoG and Steam.

How is it possible that I could install the GoG version (on my D: drive in the GoG Games directory), play it, make a few tweeks to the options page, and then uninstall it COMPLETELY. The Morrowind folder is GONE.

THen install it on Steam, open it up, and ALL THOSE TWEAKS I MADE IN THE GOG VERSION are showing up in the Steam version. (For example, I changed the difficulty in the Gog version from the default ZERO to a PLUS 7. I also changed some sound volumes.

The first time I opened the game up in Steam, I looked under options to make the same choices and they were already there. HUH?

I looked to see if there was a Morrowind.ini file in documents or My games, but no, there is not.

How is that possible?

And why can't I get the 1920/1080 resolution I pick in the Morrowind mod? I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game so many times it's gotten old and every time I reinstall the mod I select 1920/1080 and every time it comes up in a different resolution (the biggest one offered in the game itslef... 1400something by 1050something or other).

Can anyone explain either of these things? I've used the mod before on another computer and got it to run at 1920 by 1080. And yes, this computer is very capable of running that. In fact, it's the "native" resolution.

Bigs: Files in My Documents / Games?
Registary Settings?
I checked in My Documents and My games. Nothing.

I don't know how to check and what I can do about any registry settings.

You mean things like sound volume and game difficulty settings would store in the registry???

Damn, it's a wonder that thing isn't a gazillion bytes big by now if it stores all of that stuff.

Have you looked in User/"username"/AppData/Local?

Edit:
It's a hidden directory so you need to make it visible first.

Yeah, there was a Morrowind folder in there. It didn't have anything in it though, but I deleted it and am going to uninstall the game(s) again and reinsall and see if it starts "fresh" that time.

Will report back.

ADDED: Okay, I uninstalled the Steam version. Double checked the SteamApps/common folder and the Morrowind folder is gone. Doublechecked the GoG Games folder, and the Morrowind folder is gone. Doublechecked every single folder in Documents and every single sub folder in My Games. No Morrowind file or folder anywhere. And I just now doublechecked the username/appdata/local and the morrowind folder is gone.

As far as I can tell, there is NOTHING on this computer related to Morrowind save the downloaded gog setup file.

There is no way (that I know of) that if I install the game it should have anything other than default settings.

So, I will reinstall it and we shall see.

Yep, that did it!

Thank you. I was going nuts wondering how in the heck those settings were "remembered" despite not finding anything anywhere that could explain it.

Never knew that directory was there. Thank you very much for the knowledge.
Wow. There is definitely some weird shit going on here. I'm not even going to post it because I know no one will believe and think I'm lying or crazy or both. But I'm neither.

And this is bullshit. There must be some rational explanation but that's the thing about these damned machines. Because we're all using different machines with different operating systems and different hardware and software, some things just happen that are unexplainable and it's so frustrating.

I'm marked the above as the solution but it turns out that wasn't it. At all.

Sorry, that I couldn't help. :(

You did help. I never knew that folder was even there before.

It's just that didn't explain the thing I'm seeing.

I uninstalled the game again (and again doublechecked all folders, including the one you informed me of) and reinstalled it.

Clicked on "Launch" from the gog installer and installing it, and went in and checked the difficulty setting, and sure enough, it was at 0. In other words it didn't remember my setting of 7. This is what happened before when I posted above that it had worked marked it as the solution.

But then I recalled I didn't check the sound setting so all I did was launch the game again, this time from the desktop icon that gog placed, and BOOM. The difficulty setting was back at 7 (even though I didn't change it the first time I went in) and sure enough the sound settings I had made were all there again.

And that's not the only weird thing that is happening. I'm beginning to wonder if the fact it's an ASUS Republic of Gamer laptop if it doesn't have some kind of damned ASUS bloatware that might explain this. But I don't know.

OldFatGuy: Clicked on "Launch" from the gog installer and installing it,
If your normal Windows user isn't the same as the admin user you used to install the game, then clicking "Launch" from the GOG installer will launch it as the admin user that installed the game. This will have different settings/save games if the game keeps track per user (which is most games these days).
Morrowind definitely stores some settings in the registry, and these then apply to all installations of the game, no matter where they are and where they come from. With a non-Steam-installation, you can simply compy the folder and start the game without installation (even on a computer where it has not been installed before), and it will use the existing registry settings like resolution, difficulty, etc. And apparently, they still remain after uninstallation, at least if there is still another installation present.

Are you trying to change the resolution in the MGEXEgui.exe or where? Try running it as an admin, especially if the game is installed in C:\program files or C:\program files(x86). Or change the resolution directly in the registry.
