By the way, why not include games developed by women in this giveaway? Two examples I can think of offhand are Dragon Wars and Wizardry 8.
Not necessarily; some games have character creation but don't let you choose gender. For example, Eschalon: Book 1 only lets you play as a male character.
Also, there are games that give you a gender selection, but end up favoring male characters; the Gold Box games are the best example I can think of here, mainly because it's so blatant (male characters have a strength advantage over female ones, and female charactes don't get anything to compensate).
