idbeholdME: I read somewhere that they kept the 10 in for consistency (as in not to confuse people) but that they are going to eventually remove it and it will be just Windows from that point on. I don't think there are any plans for a successor. They are just going to keep updating Win (10) forever.
And some dumber programs would apparently only read the 9, and think you were running some laughably outdated software, which is why they skipped 9, word has it.

"Windows 9x" is the name people use to refer to pre-XP-post-windows-3 windows versions.
