I sort of own every Piranha bytes game on GOG and half of all the THQ games on GOG... Thankfully my obsession spilled over to steam and i have a chance to play this..

FYI: THQ Nordic, Piranha bytes you can guarantee I will buy this the second it comes on line here at GOG. I love your worlds more then anything <3 but not on steam.. never on steam. It was Risen 2, the only game on steam... i just couldn't wait for it to drop on GOG. Now I'm very thankful for that mistake <3

Edit: It was glorious, felt so right... solid combat, great voice acting, good SFX and Music, only a few cons but i can look past them. Quest system doesn't hold your hand, it felt so good! I truly hope they continue with this!

Looks great! I have tried to play Gothic (GOG) not long ago but controls were awful and even vanilla it was crashing / bugging quite often... Enjoyed Risen 3, got ELEX backlogged (PS4). I am eager to try the playable teaser hopefully by this Christmas.

Found it in my library, downloading it weight 4.6 GB for me.

My first impressions :

- Poor optimization but that is expected of a demo, runs mostly alright capped at 30 fps in WQHD for my PC.
- Seems to feature developed story from original Gothic beginning, good choice for a remake expanding on it.
- British accents and silly jokes in descriptions, dialogs... Adds fun and flavor i guess.
- Combat.. Original was terrible, this one is "for honor" like and become tedious for common mobs.
- The one thing disturbing me so far, a damned chromatic aberration filter that cannot be removed AFAIK...
- Also lens flare, bloom, fake HDR and post processing overload in general.

Finished the demo, it is ok but feels like a small fry à la Arcania so far, still happy to know it's a possibility.

Answering the question about the original being able to be purchased after the new Gothic game release - knowing that original Titan Quest and Red Faction: Guerrilla isn't available to be purchased separately from their remastered versions, I would say it's very doubtful.

As for new Gothic Playable Teaser it feels more like a new average action RPG with some Gothic vibes than a Gothic re-imagining (as they said on a intro screen). Yes, it is a "re-imagining the whole thing" and not a remake as some might think. So there's only one thing I don't understand - if their target audience is new player base (it's obvious if you play teaser a little bit), why they gave Gothic Playable Teaser only to those who own old Gothic related games.

Because this makes sure people that play know what they are getting... we the PB fans know the games they produce and expect a certain style of game... I'm personally blown away by the teaser. I would have no problem buying this on release. Its pretty solid and feels like they put some decent polished on it already in regards to combat and movement.

My only gripe is the lens flair on torches, other then that I'm happy with it all.

IMO, G1 & G2 were fine, except the NoTR expansion on G2 focused too much on meta-stats; if any game in the trilogy needed a serious face-lift, it would be G3. . . what a dud. It was a wonderful series, and I'd like to see it end on a good note.

These are such a plague on modern games. They all want to look like films instead of video games. It's baffling.

More like they want to look like home videos made with a cheap camcorder ;-)

I... I try to be positive, I really do.
I know I sound like the party pooper, but I watched all the related material and this "Gothic" is the absolute worst they could do with the series. There is not a single element, not *one*, I swear, I'd salvage. Rejected on all the line, the developers have absolutely no idea of what made Gothic great, and probably (conisdering they put an insane amount of annoyances in, first of all the main character contant blubbering) they have no idea of how to make a good game period.

Yeah, also watched it on YT last night and nothing there to recreate that Gothic atmosphere, have that pull that it had. First, the character's babbling just threw me off completely, then the voice actor for Diego was a mess too, and all those differences between speech and text even in such a short demo, what does that say about what one can expect for the game? And the area just feels generic, not what Gothic was, combat seems about as poor as it was back then, so if they meant to improve that it doesn't seem like they managed it at all, and all the video effects and bloom and what not are just jarring.

Only Piranha Bytes can make a Gothic game. You need to have at least lived in the Ruhr area to even get the mentality for the characters right. In the best case scenario, it will be a decent game in its own right, but it will never be a good Gothic game.

While I do agree, don't forget that the classic Gothic 1 demo was just as worse as it shows almost nothing about the game at all.

This demo really is nothing but a prototype showcase. The more the people are interested BUT complain, the better the devs can reshape the project for the better. And since the Unreal engine is so malable, you can create a gritty game from this (don't forget that Gothic 1 had much less "grit" than games like Baldurs Gate and Deus Ex when it came to visuals and even dialogues).

Some of the dialogue you see/hear in this prototype was directly taken from Gothic 1 as well. The parts that were not did fell a little bit off but thats easily fixable if you write down the entirety of the dialogues that can happen in Gothic 1 and add a few meaningful quests here and there. They can take lessons from Gothic 2 and The Witcher 3 (in parts at least as The Witcher 3 is mostly based around Gothic 2s way on how quests play out).

I personally have two worries about this game. 1. They seem to want to reshape Gothic into a "The Witcher-like", which seems pretty ill-advised since especially Gothic 1 had a few classic RPG elements that were mostly famous in central europe and therefor couldn't achieve widespread appeal. And 2. they might completely remove the subtle fourth-wall breaking where the nameless hero implies that anyone in this game is incompetent or has "issues" as a criticism of video game writing (nameless hero was basically the only one who is "sober"). This style of writing was greatly sanatized with the English version but kept intact by the Polish and Russian translations (and the english version is mostly rejected by fans). If they nail these two points, most people will not complain I think. People consider the dialogues in the three Gothic games as one of the richest in video gaming because it doesn't take itself seriously and thus THQ Nordic Barcelona have some shoes to fill in order to make the dialogue work with the remake as well (not just copy the dialogues but rather enrich them with more to fill the gaps).

To "proof" my point, one of the main criticisms of the Gothic 3 ADD-ON was that the nameless hero was completly out of character and nothing made sense. The story itself didn't made any sense because of this primary writing flaw and it felt soulless.

Laughed at the joke, but I really do think it's about emulating movies. Bloom, depth of field, chromatic aberration... hell they even have rain drops or blood drops on the screen half the time. All of it is emulating a "camera," instead of what they should be doing which is emulating human vision, i.e. being there in that world. Especially for first-person games.

Honestly the fact we have cutscenes at all in an interactive medium is about game designers wanting to be Spielberg instead of Warren Spector.
