I have never liked those "spam-units-to-walk-in-a-single-line" type of games...

If you want a game closer to DQ, then I would rather recommend a game like Protector IV.V

Voted too. The author seemed to have pretty good experience with GOG with his first game, so maybe it is given the sequel will come here too. EDIT: Ok so it is confirmed already, apparently.

Plants vs Zombies wasn't that bad either, kinda soothing, like sucking one's own dick.

except it it is the forth entry in a series, released 2011, Protector 1 dates back to 2008. DQ is from 2012, so I am not sure what can be said to be a knockoff of what :)

edit - truth to be told, though, there are a lot of entries in the tower defense genere, and several of them are themed like DQ / Protector, it can not be said that Protector series started it either, not by a long shoot.

It is just because it is an online flash game. The mechanics are just as well developed and deep as DQ.
