Not as famous as David Bowie, Prince or Alan Rickman, he was also a great artist, and a true master in his field. His DC: The New Frontier i probably my favourite comic of all time (yes, even above the likes of Sandman and Watchmen), and it was all his work, writing and illustrations. It is an unparalleled masterpiece in my opinion. But all his work was impressive. Batman: Ego, Superman: Kryptonite, his run in The Spirit published by DC and of course his superb comic adaptations of Richard Stark's Parker novels are all simply fantastic. American comics lost one of it's greatest modern day masters.
