I have a one of these gardening projects in close proximity and they had to put a fence around it for protection. People are natural born vandals.

Though I too can't see what anyone would gain from destroying gardens, I think it's a valid question/point. Vandalism is a problem, at least in urban areas, pretty much as crime itself is a problem. That's why we have law enforcement in the first place, otherwise we'd "all just get along" and be nice.

We have such gardens as well, at least various supermarket chains have started offering planting spots to regular customers which are interested in having a patch but can't do any gardening elsewhere, but as far as I know they are guarded. Maybe not 24/7, but there is someone in charge that keeps an eye on the place.

People are not natural born vandals, I strongly disagree. Being "civilzed" within our society makes people what they are, natives do not know or live the diseases of civilization like greed, envy or lust for destruction.

It seems I had a too rosy picture about the situation here. The article is about the vandalism here against those city gardens, and some of them e.g. hire security guards to visit the gardens a few times every night.

So yeah, seems it is a problem here too then. Damn herbivores!

Some people aren't meant for agriculture. I remember hating to take care of the yard of my grandparents myself, for example sweeping the leaves gives me even today shudders. Maybe that's why I always avoided later to buy a house instead an apartment.

Exactly this. I lived all my childhood and adolescence in a house (with my parents), but when I moved on my own, I've always lived in an apartment and haven't really yearned to get a house of my own. Sure it also matters that apartments are generally cheaper than houses, but if I wanted to spend more money on residency, I'd probably just buy a fancier and bigger apartment, not a house.

Sure a house would have its own benefits like I could wash clothes in the middle of the night if I wanted (here you have to do it before 10pm), I could have barbeque parties outside in the summer etc., but I just hate all the lawn moving, leaf raking, snow plowing etc. Well, at least I did when I was a kid/youngster, not sure if it would be ok now.

I find gardening and stuff about as interesting and exciting as washing dishes or vacuum cleaning, ie. I do it as little as possible.
