A heartfelt thanks from me as well. Been in love with the series ever since a friend of mine lend me his copy of Fallout 1 back in 1997. I remember my first time leaving the vault and venturing into that strange and foreboding desert. Only to be immediately killed by the first randomly encountered pack of radscorpions along the way. Time to start over again from the beginning. There was this guy in this small town who carried a shotgun which could mean survival in the next dessert encounter. A failed stealing attempt later I had to kill him and every soul in that town. My conscience heavier then all the loot from that town I moved on in this barely inhabitable world. Those days my English was barely passable and all the characters spoke barely comprehensible gibberish that was very different from the English I had learned at school. In retrospect this even added to the feeling of lonesomeness and alienation that is so prevalent in the Fallout universe.

You rarely come by a game today where your actions matter and leave a lasting impressions on the world around you.
Sure it sucks to die of radiation poisoning you picked up in some pre-war vault a couple of weeks ago and weren't even aware of. If only I had found earlier I could have made it to a doctor to get cured. I think games are always way more immersive if your actions have fairly realistic consequences.

This is also part of the reason why Fallout 3 sucks, the real time combat is just too easy and has hardly any tactical components. The player character feels overpowered and where there is no challenge, there is no reward in overcoming the odds.

Just signed up for GOG and the offer of the Fallout games.
Installed the GOG downloader but can see no way to actually download the free games.

Second, i wish a merry christmas to all of you, dont play too much fallout, have a little time for your family ;-)

When you sign in to GOG there is a menu/banner thing at the top. Click on My Account. There you will see all your games.
Click on the game you want and activate the GOG Downloader switch if not already activated. It switches between browser and downloader downloading.
Then click on the file that you want to download and it will show up in the downloader and start downloading.

I would also like to sincerely thank the wonderful folks at GOG for this big surprise! Christmas truly came early for me this year.
