Could both of you please post your PC specification? Most importantly, what operating system and graphics card you have.

This sounds like graphics card error, and common troubleshooting steps in that case are:
- install DirectX 9 libraries
- update your graphics card drivers
- run the game as administrator (right-click on shortcut, pick relevant option)
