Deep RTS with shallow story

It is one of my favorite RTS games. It's not flawless and you may see complains that it's a Starcraft rip-off but I recommend to give it a try. What's really cool is that there are 5 depth levels so your submarines are able to move in all x,y,z directions. More importantly, whenever they are attacked they try to dodge the enemy torpedo/plazma blast/sonic wave by changing the depth level. It really influences the gameplay - a big cluster of submarines is pretty easy to hit: even if one submarine manages to avoid the torpedo it may hit another unit. And of course the submarine cannot dodge if there are other submarines above and below it. Two or three light submarines can easily destroy a turret without getting hit even once! I haven't seen stuff like that in other RTS games from this era. There are three different factions: two human - White Sharks (cheap units but without much armor), Black Octopi (Technologically advanced with expensive but better submarines) and one alien race - Silicons. Their units uses rechargeable power to shield themselves but you can run out of this resource (you get it from metal deposits) so be careful how you manage it. Each faction is significantly different. All three campaigns are rather hard but still manageable. You have to master all different aspects to succeed so despite shallow story the game should keep you entertained.

What and unknown and forgotten gem!

What you are looking at now is one very unusual RTS game. Submarine Titans is, from my point of view, very underrated and not that much known game. I have stumbled upon its demo back in the days and pursued the full copy of the game. I still play it today. Knowing that GOG re-released it, this is an insta-buy for me. So, what you get for those few bucks? - Isometric RTS - Three sides of conflict earch with totally unique submarines and style - Depth, as there are 5 levels of depth in the game and you can use them to your advantage in battles and when building defenses - Hard time getting through campaigns - Very unusual theme for a strategy game - Nice research tree, again totally different for each side of the conflict You cannot compare this game to ie. Age of Empires 2, this one plays its own league. If you are curious and like RTS games, you may as well want to try it out. I don't know about any other game that could compare to this one. Not from its ra and not even from today. I'm glad I can have GOG copy of this one!

Unique old RTS

A very interesting old RTS with a unique setting. Definitely recommended. About the game: The good: Sci-fi with submarines; Starcraft under water. Immersive from a sci-fi perspective. Lots of submarines, buildings, technologies and game mechanics. 3 factions, 2 of which (White Sharks and Black Octopi) are human and similar and the third (Silicons) who are alien and more exotic, depth levels and underwater mountains, various submarines with different attacks and different purposes, building and vehicle capture, resource conversion and transport (with containers), teleportation, superweapons, hacking enemies and many more. Complex interface with lots of details (but also with shortcomings). Great ambiance. It looks and feels nice. You can zoom and rotate the map. The bad: It is very complex and playing well requires understanding as many game mechanics as possible. You may need to read the manual. Certain things will remain unclear even after you do. You can't double click to select multiple units of the same type. When selecting multiple units only the total number of units is shown not the composition of your selection. The stoy is simple and the writing is poor. More "Battlefield Earth" than "Alien" or "Dune". Music is mediocre. The GOG experience: The good: The game is playable and works well in windows 10. The bad: No goodies. The manual would be very usefull but it is not included and you have to look for it on the web. The game has 3 screen resolution settings 800x600 (default), 1024x 768 and 1280x1024. Switching to 1280x1024 makes the game jump from fullscreen to windowed everytime you start and end a mission since only the game is rendered at 1280x1024 while the menus are still at 800x600. Atl+Tab out of the game and then back in returns the game to fullscreen.

Underrated unusual RTS gem

I had this game for native XP version and despite I cannot consider among the top RTS or played so many hours as with others, it has very redeemable traits which make it worth a shot. The game is of the type of RTS which has three strongly distinguished armies. The techtree is wide and depth. The number of units is enough. Pros: - Mechanic of upkeep: each weapon/shot wasted has a cost on your resources so that you have to maintain a flux of income to support the army; otherwise they don't shoot. - levels of height/depth means. You can and should move your units not only in the horizontal plane to take advantageous positions but also up and down. - AI editor: something which was made with care and few RTS games have. - RNG maps: something that other games of this style has not. Cons: - The motion is less fluid, or frantic as with other RTS. Of course this is due to the atypical setting, which is submarine and the boats move slower that expected for vehicles, crafts or spacecrafts. This perhaps requires some adaptation to the pacing. - The maps eventually look the same. Again, due to the setting. - As far as I remember the story isn't original. It's the eternal conflict between two human factions and an outsider third party in a distant sci fi setting. If you liked that Abyss movie you'll love this game. - In my case, the sci fi universes require a bit of investment to properly learn the roles of each unit and assimilate or link them to known, historical ones. In the case of submarine warfare they tend to be too similar one to the other as compared to land warfare. It's a game I would like to try again but it requires some commitment and ability to think on 3d to enjoy it the most. No other submarine warfare RTS can do it better, and I doubt somebody will try to do: it's a rare gem.

Instant buy

Can't believe this is actually happening, only checked a few days back if it's any chance this will get released ! Christmas came early ! I've been waiting for it for almost twenty years, ever since I played the demo over and over again. It's very atmospheric and immersive and the tech tree is pretty large, so you'll have a lot to play with.
