Steam seems to have gone live before the patch notes are out. Should be here later this morning.

Discussions there indicate a significant change to inventory management. Apparently general slots will no longer be useable for technology upgrades. It looks like existing tech in general slots are converted to installable modules which have to be re-installed in the tech section.

However, it seems (again, the patch notes aren't out yet) that tech upgrades are still limited to three per technology, so three shield upgades in tech + three in general will now be only three in tech. Definitely makes Permadeath more exciting.

Suggest making an offline backup of your saves. Maybe start a new save under 4.0 until the dust settles and leave your 100 hour (or 1000+ hour) save alone until things are straightened out. Or stick with 3.99 for a while.
I'd need to wait for all my mods to update anyway, so even if it gets released, I won't be able to play for a while xD
Yeah, inventory is now a mess. Lots of people now have useless placeholder upgrades crowding their inventory. They can't be moved to tech, because you can't double up on upgrades. I don't see how that makes survival and permadeath more exciting, only more grindy.
And the new inventory item images look juvenile; they dumbed down the inventory system for the Nintendo Switch release and screwed over their current user base in the process. Sure hope they fix this mess.
hope the offline update arrives today, want to play this weekend :D

I'm actually looking forward to starting new games and playing around with the new difficulty settings. Maybe I'll like Survival (my favorite "mode") even more now.

The QoL additions are nice.

The game Astroneer used the "trade rocket" method, and it worked pretty well. That game also has a "re-package items to get them back into the inventory" feature that NMS 4.0 now has.

Renaming saves! YAY!

Since the patch isn't here on GOG yet, I can have fun reading the litany of complaints on the Steam forum.

Meanwhile, wondering how long before a "patch-fix" patch comes out...

It's now 4:30pm UK time, still no download. GOG gamers, still 2nd class sometimes....
Hopefully the offline version will make it today, instead of having to wait all weekend until next week for it.
Would be nice to have it now that I know it exists. Are updates normally slow here?

It depends on the game. Historically, NMS, arrives later than Steam and, sometimes, skips one update or another directly into the next one.

To be more clear, for example, instead of the new 4.0.0 update, they delay it a bit more and it arrives with the first patch already (let's say, version 4.0.1).

But it would be more likely to happen between these smaller quick fix patches, not with the major base one (in other words, something like, skipping 4.0.1 and going on 4.0.2 or 4.0.3 directly, not the big 4.0.0).
Also announced a new twitch drops campaign, now with Nintendo Account connection. Of course, no GoG on sight.
After a couple years without touching it, I was interested to replay it with this update, but it's nowhere in sight.

I'm glad I'll be starting from scratch. Players from other platforms are mad with the changes in inventory. Some lost half of their work.

yea I still cant get the update either
Little frustrating that this is now... what, 4 hours late for GOG users?

That's okay though. Gives me an opportunity to slam through some demos.

Looking forward to the new and harsher survival mode. =D
There has always been a lag for GOG users, they have never forgotten us. Now that the net code was fixed way back around foundations it's only ever been a day max!
so then I'm hoping that I can play it tomorrow...
