It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).

Before I file in a ticket or bother the support team, I want to ask if anyone has had a similar problem.
My game won't launch at all. I can hear the HD working, but nothing launches except an 'error' message (I've included a screencap).
I've tried reinstalling, updating my drivers, and disabling sounds and generally just tweaking the .ini file to no luck.
I'm running XP with the latest servicepack. My system specs are much greater than the required - I can run Gothic 2 with no problems at all.

There were two threads in this forum about that exact problem. I don't know why the admins deleated them, as other people could have benifited from them. Anyhow I had your exact problem. One of the processes running under Task Manager was causing my game not to load. It was some sort of HP Support program that was my problem. I would suggest going into task manager and closing as many programs as you can without crashing your computer. The problem I had was that the process I had to close was one of the many svchost files.
You can download a program called Process Explorer from this site....
http://www.download.com/Process-Explorer/3000-2094_4-10223605.html
This will let you see the names of all the proceses running and you can try killing them one at a time then quickly try to load Gothic. These processes usually start running again in a few seconds but its long enough to get the game loading. If this is going in the right direction and it is one of the processes running than I can let you know how to disable the process and you shouldn't have any prpblems after that.

Well, I'll be damned. Killed a HP support dll. which was executed from a svchost. Gothic worked flawlessly afterwards. That's what you get for buying a budget PC I guess.
So yeah. All I need to do is kill the process for good. So how would I go on about doing that? :)
To prevent it from loading at start-up, go to Start > Run > type services.msc > press OK. Scroll down and find the service called: (whatever process you wan't to disable) and double-click on it. Then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK and close any open windows. (You might need admin. privileges to do this).

Yeah, it worked flawlessly. I'm currently replaying Gothic 1. Cheers to you, greyspirit! :)
I had this problem under Win Xp, service pack 3. I have a Q9400 (Core2 quad core), 4GB RAM, and 8800GT NVIDIA card. I know the 4GB is overkill for XP 32 bit, but it was a good deal (sorta why I'm on GOG).
Anyway, I tried killing my antivirus (Avira) and tried turning off the firewall (Comodo). It didn't make anything launch (no splash, just a stalled process (0% CPU use) in the Window Task Manager). I tried re-running the VDFS init program in the installed directories (.\Gothic 2 Gold\System\...). So I figured I search around. Nothing worked.
Then I remembered I have Spybot's TeaTimer running on my computer. Exiting that program from its Tray Icon works. I now can start the game again!
The problem for me was apple mobile device, closed it and it worked flawlessly.

For anyone else who might have this problem, this is how I solved it in a few easy steps:
Windows Firewall => allow Gothic 1 (may work for other versions as well)
Process Explorer => restart Gothic.exe and rundll.exe, then worked just fine.
I had the same problem but when I tried the solutions offered on the form nothing worked. Any other ideas?
Ditto here. I'm on Windows 7 (32-bit). I have a second boot system under Windows XP that I never use (7 is just too lovely), and that one runs Gothic II just fine.

Thanks for the tip, downloaded XP mode for windows 7 and installed gothic. It will start now and I get audio but no visuals (just a black screen) any ideas on what's wrong (sorry I am not real tech savy, it could be a video card issue but I do not know how to make virtual XP use my video card. Then again it could be something else all together.

Thanks in advance

UPDATE

if I kill everything with that taskmanager but the essential the game will not give me an error message but will just run in the back ground and do nothing :(

XP mode for Win 7 does not support Direct X or any sort of 3d graphics acceleration. You will not be able to run Gothic with it.
For people still having trouble getting the game to start in win7, you might try this:

well this sucks for you guys :( Just to confirm what others have said, I've found that I can't have chrome open when I try to launch gothic. As soon as I close Chrome, Gothic launches fine.
