JudasIscariot: Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to make another Beastman Chaos Warrior run. Sooooo many fun mutations with that build on top of my demonic patron randomly messing with me at every level up. One time, one of my demonic patrons just outright killed me after I leveled up.
Reading this I understand that I am still too softcore to even try such games :) I remember playing Demise, I had a very nice dungeon session, got tons of loot (some unidentified tomes which looked like extremely valuable stat tomes), so it was time to better go back to town and make save backup. But I thought "I so want to visit this one room over here, only this one room". Guess what, that one room had teleporter right behind the door, my party was scattered (everyone was teleported helplessly alone to some random place on gigantic map, and auto-map stopped tracking my progress). It could as well be "Game Over" screen, I was close to smashing monitor in pieces..

Ever since then I prefer to play games, where you can manually save everywhere or almost everywhere :)

The best graphics are all in your head :)

You do not need to like "рогалики" :)

I am playing this one so as to clear my head from all the hype around the latest graphics craze for games. I like the fact that I have to use my imagination while playing PosChengband. Also, the lack of 3D graphics means you get more varied gameplay.

Did you know that you can play as a ring in this game? How do you play as a ring, you ask? Simple, you have a mechanic in this game that's called "Glimmer" and you use that to attract a random humanoid to pick you up and wear you and then you take control over that humanoid.

That's just a small sample of what happens when you eschew graphics :)

So why not make another step and play DnD instead? No game, no matter how well-programmed and thought-out, can beat an experienced DM with a lot of imagination and a sadistic vibe... I mean, an inclination to make adventures interesting rather than simple.

Two problems with this approach for me:

1. Other people. I like to play games in peace and I don't like having to rely on others for this.

2. Good DMs are very hard to come by :)

Hmm, I see. The first point is harder to deal with (the obvious thing is to go on a session with people you like and don't mind relying on, but these people might not be into D&D), the solution to the second problem is but one created topic away. I'm sure if you asked the forumites about DMs, you'd have a long list to choose from in next to no time. :-)

Oh I am sure of that :) Problem is that everyone is a wee bit scattered around the world unless someone's invented teleportation and I didn't know about it :D

Sure, if you can give me a Beastman race, Chaos Warrior class that allows for mutations like being able to emit radiation, grow a scorpion tail, wings, an electric aura (just to name a few that I have seen so far...) AND a patron demon that also tends to slap on mutations whenever you level up. Also, the DM would have to roll for the patron demon's actions during level ups. Let's not forget that that the dungeons in PosChengband change every time you enter them so there's that.

Oh and I just got warts that take away some Charisma but give me 5 Armor Class :P

Well, I wouldn't be surprised if such a DM existed... wouldn't even be surprised if there were more than one. :-P

I can't remember if I asked you already (the information was stored on an external data source which seems to have been misplaced :-D) if you've played ADOM. I've lost countless troll monks thanks to this game. :-)

I tried it a bit and I don't know, I just could not get into that one. Might try the ASCII version instead of the version with graphics :)

If you want a roguelike take on some popular games, I recommend DoomRL or DiabloRL :)
