nmillar: Would you prefer to do the Kilimanjaro Challenge in Autumn (Fall) 2011 or Spring 2012?
I'll say either date for now but I that may change when I speak to more people at my workplace.

EDIT: Spring does give a few extra months of money-raising though.

I'm just finishing my diploma this year (and for the last two years heh heh *awkward laugh*), so I can't really be out of the country for too long a time, plus I'm not really fit (you're trying to get someone to climb a mountain in a gaming forum? Wrong with you what is?). But I'll be modestly supporting your charity choice, make no mistake. ;)

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking; an extra 5 months worth of fund-raising should ensure we raise a really good amount for charity.

Going to attempt the three peaks challenge later in the year with Akwater in an effort to prepare us for Kilimanjaro. Might use it as an opportunity to raise some additional funds as well.
If I do go which is still up in the air, I was thinking of doing a safari afterwards. Its something I've always wanted to do and whilst I'm over there... So with that tacked on its going to take me a while to save, so for me spring would be a better choice.

Also anyone else intrested in the safari afterwards?
Wow this is a really cool proposition! I'm kinda sold, you're like a charity travel agent lol

As long as it doesn't involve shooting anything other than a camera, it'd be awesome :)
Yep :)

I figure 3 peaks in the UK see the gogers that are on that side of the pond... and get drunk lol
It's 3:23 am here and had no will to read through all of 7 pages of comments ... but ... Yes... I'm interested ... very much....

You could get drunk while climbing the mountain - after I take out a massive life insurance policy on you

I don't believe in hunting unless your survival depends on it. So definatly the camera touristy kind of safari.

GameRager: One more step down to your goal! :D
avatar
nmillar: Exactly. I'll take whatever money I can get out of people / companies! Having one picture taken sounds fairly reasonable for $500!

Are those participating happy for me to use real names, photos, etc in promotional material? I think a dedicated website will help give our cause(s) some much needed publicity!
If we're promoting it as a bunch of GOGers then we should use handles, I have no problem with real names and a photo of my ugly ass if we need it.
avatar
nmillar: Okay, had a helpful meeting with a marketing manager at a gaming company, who asked a load of questions that I didn't have the answers for!

What is in it for us?
How many people are involved?
When will the event take place?
How much exposure will the event get (media, etc)?

He also suggested I write an official letter requesting sponsorship, and if the "right" answers to the above are included, then they would pay my deposit for me in return for having my photo taken wearing a branded t-shirt at the summit!

EDIT: removed the company name - not giving them free PR till they cough up! :)
We do need to ensure press coverage in our local papers, etc. or company sponsorships are right out. Also, we'll be wearing their logos somehow.

I am a miserable photographer, but I bought an E-PL1 just so I can haul it up a mountain, so I can just stock a few extra batteries and SD cards to take loads of shots.

GameRager: One pic is ok as long as you guys don't have to tack a huge banner for the game company on the side of the mountain while doing a rockettes number on live television or some such nonsense. :D
avatar
akwater: THAT WOULD BE AWESOME! lol... however... I cant think of a game tie in for something like that... :) Maybe one of the shooters but... im not bringing guns :p
As I start to wonder what ak's preferred carry and load is...

Something semi-auto, Sig .40 with Federal Hydroshocks?

EDIT: You don't have to answer that:)

nmillar: A quick question for those who have already expressed an interest:

Would you prefer to do the Kilimanjaro Challenge in Autumn (Fall) 2011 or Spring 2012?

akwater - either date
nmillar - either date
I don't think I can make fall, so spring.

There are a few non-GOGers getting involved too. Using our real names will make our fund raising efforts more accessible to a wider audience. I'm going to promote this wherever possible.

I'm also planning to knock up a basic website at the weekend - if anyone fancies lending a hand (particularly if you're good with graphic design), give me a shout!

Yeah, I figure spring would be the best date for most people, so let's go with that. That shouldn't stop us from starting our fund raising efforts as soon as possible - get the word out any way you can!

If you need somewhere to host it, I have a Linode server you are welcome to use.

How does Linode work? I was going to use some kind of content management system, since I work full time I don't really have the time to create a website from the ground up!

Linode is a VPS provider, I can install whatever CMS you want to use on it.
