Mentalepsy: What was Return to Castle Wolfenstein like?

Solid first person shooter fun. It's old school "if-it-moves-shoot-it", with some newer gameplay mechanics like stealth. But the bottom line is, RTCW was rock solid because it was you, one man, against an entire army. Nothing can stop you. Black Ops paratroopers armed with FG42s can't stop you. The experimental Ubersoldat is cream puffs compared to your badassness. And it's only because you, the protagonist, William BJ Blazkowicz, are badass enough to survive on dog food and cold meals.
I can't believe Raven raped the series.

Mentalepsy: This.
I haven't played Call of Duty, but isn't it pretty much the opposite of one guy shredding dozens of Nazis with a minigun while surviving on dog food and scavenged meat?

RtCW was what Wolfenstein 3d would have been if it originally came out during the 2000's. It was pure Wolfenstein goodness that was actually better than the original.
Well dang.
Now I'm sorry I missed out on RtCW. Last time I saw it on the shelf it was still $30, so I never picked it up. Plus, I kinda had the impression that it was more of a generic war shooter than the gonzo bullet party that Wolf 3D was.

Ohhhh it's a bullet party alright, especially when you pick up the Venom XD

Your impression was accurate. I didn't like it at all, no matter how many chances I gave it over the years. And don't get me started on the horrendously broken stealth sections, either.
Multiplayer was great, though.
If you want a proper follow-up to Wolf3D, play Soldier of Fortune 1 - it even had a level set in a German castle with Nazi regalia all over the place. Just ignore the publicity's constant and bizarre claims of 'realism.'

To settle this difference of opinion, I demand that frostcircus and lowyhong battle it out with jagged tin can lids.

Don't forget JudasIscariot. I am aware that I'm very much in the minority here, since the game was overall pretty well-received by the general public. But, try as I may, I could not join their ranks.
The game's on Steam, by the way.

I shall be dual-wielding the aforementioned jagged tin can lids...
One nice touch about Return to Castle Wolfenstein was the fact that some of the guns in the game were actually prone to overheating if you just kept your finger on the trigger(the Sten gun carried by the female soldiers comes to mind). It gave the game a nice touch of realism considering the submachine guns of the time did actually overheat.

I'll be picking it up next week.
BTW, to everyone who doesn't seem to like the paranormal aspects or the lack of realism, did you even play Wolf3d? The original had zombies with guns growing out of their chests, Hitler in a mechanized suit with 4 chain guns, and all sorts of insanity. I can't really critique the storyline or plot because no matter how crazy it may be, that's what the original was like.
I can't even count the amount of times deja vu has struck when looking at images and videos of that game. FEAR, Fallout 3 (Tesla Armour), Prey, Call of Duty... hell, even Timeshift which had enough deja vu of its own. It seems almost like the only games it has yet to remind me of are its predecessors.
It might be a good game. But I doubt those that don't buy it will be missing out on much.
A little bit off topic but...
Am I the only one that got a major wolfenstein vibe from the first Hellboy movie ?
Hehe :)
I'm buying the new game. I loved the atmosphere in every raven game I played. As long as I can turn of the lights and have a fun playthrough it will all be good.

I played the demo to RTCW, and it was half decent and half retarded. I believe the popular term is "zombie closets".
Every minute or so, a solid wall would burst open to reveal zombies, who had apparently been sealed up in a little hole behind the brick, just waiting for ME to go by so that they could burst forth and attack.
At the time, I found the concept too idiotic to enjoy.

I just shot them in the face and carried on with the game.

RTCW was a great game but I was a little disappointed at the final boss, he was so easy to kill compared to some of the other earlier encounters in the game. I can remember the first time I saw a fire zombie though and the fire breath they have, I was amazed at how cool it looked and how long it reached.

I'm one of those retards that enjoy the call of duty franchise, yes even world at war, so I'm looking forward to Wolfenstein.

TheCheese33: I got the chance to play a demo of Wolfenstein on this giant screen at QuakeCon. It is very similar to Call of Duty. Think that, but with the unique Veil mechanic that reminds me a lot of Prey's spirit mode. I didn't get to see much of what it was good for, other than walking through certain walls (Just like Prey). I thought it was pretty fun. As much fun as you'd probably have playing a Call of Duty game, with a bunch of paranormal elements added in. For a game that runs on the Doom 3 engine, it looked great.
I'll try to get my hands on Brink and Rage tomorrow, and I'll let you know what I think of them.

GC'S EIC was at QuakeCon. See if you're in any of these (crappy) pictures.
The sense view thing was previously used in their Wolverine game, X-Men Origins: Wolverine - Uncaged Edition (which is a pretty cool game as far as movie tie-ins go). This sort of thing is showing up in quite a few games now.
