I got the chance to play a demo of Wolfenstein on this giant screen at QuakeCon. It is very similar to Call of Duty. Think that, but with the unique Veil mechanic that reminds me a lot of Prey's spirit mode. I didn't get to see much of what it was good for, other than walking through certain walls (Just like Prey). I thought it was pretty fun. As much fun as you'd probably have playing a Call of Duty game, with a bunch of paranormal elements added in. For a game that runs on the Doom 3 engine, it looked great.
I'll try to get my hands on Brink and Rage tomorrow, and I'll let you know what I think of them.
Wolfenstein is now basically Call of Duty with MORE zombies and paranormal crap??? Decline!!!!

There weren't exactly many places that franchise could go, so they went the route most war games are taking.
i dont care if people say that its good or bad, i got a free rental coupon with wolfensteins name on it :P
Crap. I'll pass. I knew it's too good to be true to expect games today to be as good as those of old.
But wait, what do you mean, though, when you say it's similar to COD?

There's a star on a compass bar at the top that directs me to my objective. Regenerating health. Shooting Nazis with familiar guns. It all shouts "Call of Duty" to me.
Maybe since it seems like it's early on in the game, it gets different later on. Somehow, I think the only "different" will be throwing in mutants.
The one thing that made the previous Wolfenstein different from COD1 was the mission structure. It felt like Rambo time traveled back 20 years under the alias BJ. Even the standard "infiltrate base" missions felt very cool because you were pitted against insurmountable odds, and there is a strong feel of "the fate of the world hinges on you".
Is this feeling present in the latest Wolf?

It's got a goddamned quest compass for Christ's sake...this is not ye olde Wolfenstein but some abomination.

Well, I was fighting alongside rebels in the level I played, so I'm not sure if it gets different later, but the Veil powers make you feel like you're someone special.

I wouldn't exactly call it an abomination; the shooting felt very solid. Just not like the classic Wolfenstein we all know and love.
The only time I ever like Nazis in fiction is when the occult is involved, but even still this doesn't look nearly as awesome as Return to Castle Wolfenstein was, or the incredible pwnage that the Hellboy comics supply.
I'll probably pick it up when it reaches the discount bin, or a weekend deal on Steam...if they even get it (goddamn they need Raven's catalogue--especially JEDI...OUTCAST..................). I know the creator's offer to pay everyone back for their purchase if sales beat out Madden is a load of pewp and won't ever happen.
Keep in mind that part of my enjoyment might have come from the "Oh my God, I'm playing the new Wolfenstein in a room surrounded by gamers on a giant-ass screen with a computer sitting next to me so amazing that I'd die to get it in my home!"

In this situation, even Neuro Hunter could look amazing.

This.
I haven't played Call of Duty, but isn't it pretty much the opposite of one guy shredding dozens of Nazis with a minigun while surviving on dog food and scavenged meat?
What was Return to Castle Wolfenstein like?

Call of Duty is exactly the opposite. The entire idea (or what used to be the idea) behind the franchise was that no one man won World War II, but the actions of a collective whole did the trick.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein was you going through Castle Wolfenstein, murdering every soldier you came across. It hasn't aged as well as Half-Life, but some good fun can still be had from it.

Cake. A delicious, fragile cake. If handled carefully, it would stay firm until it entered your mouth, so that you may savor the most of it. Rushing it would make the damn thing crumble, and half of it would be left all over the place, so you would spend to much time picking up the pieces to be able to enjoy it.
Err, well that's sort of the gist of it. You're put alone, against rather high amounts of opposing enemies, making the game a bit challenging, and charging head on rather unpractical in some cases. Very fun game though. The way the levels are designed I've seen in no game after, but some games before (most of them by id as well).
