timppu: The main thing I currently still find irritating in Windows 8 is how most default programs are fullscreen WinRT apps: PDF readers, media players etc.
Yeah, that is the most annoying thing for me also. There is a 5$ program that fixes this some. It allows the Metro things to run in their own windows. It's called ModernMix and made by Stardock. Small price to pay to keep one's sanity I would say :)

timppu: If I understood Fenix right, he ran the game in hires mode, as the game would for some reason not run in the lores mode.

Fenixp: I think Trilarion's point was that GOG should put the default config of their game to the most compatible state possible, with which I have to agree. Outcast has a terrible options menu.
As it happens, for me Outcast runs in Windows 8 with all the three different resolution options:

320x240
400x300 (this to me was the default, so for you the game failed using this resolution?)
512x384 ("hires")

The only problem I have it is that with all three resolutions, the game is not running in full-screen, but in a small window in the middle of the screen with black borders on all four sides. With 512x384, at least it is the biggest.

So I still need to find out a way to make it full screen so that there are black borders only on the sides, or maybe use the 3rd party hires updates? I didn't recall this game used such odd resolutions, maybe many graphics cards become confused with them.

I didn't try it with Win7 yet, but I am pretty confident I will have the same "game not running in full screen"-problem also there. But I'll still try it there too.

timppu: ..
Here you go. Yep, the patch solves the black borders issue, if you use the right resolution for your screen of course.

Thanks. So the "black borders" issue is business as usual with Outcast, that can be fixed only with the unofficial hires patch?

I don't recall if I had the same black borders back when I played the CD version a long time ago. Maybe I just didn't care about them.

Outcast: runs fine in Win8 for me. The game does not run in 4:3 full screen, but this issue is both in Win7 and Win8. The game originally uses so oddball resolutions like 400x300 and 512x384 that maybe this was to be expected. I'm going to try the 3rd party hires patch to get the game run full screen.

Star Wolves: runs fine in Win8, I didn't see any issues. So to OP, your problems with this are probably related to something else than the Windows version, e.g. graphics card drivers or something.

Haegemonia Gold: lo and behold, this does indeed crash on me in Windows 8 after the intro videos. In Windows 7 (on the same PC) it seems to run fine. I didn't test different compatibility settings too much (at least admin level or Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode didn't help), but I'd be ready to mark this currently as "does not work in Windows 8", unless someone is able to run it somehow.

Then again, could it be related to all those Visual C++ 2003 DirectX runtime blaablaablaa things? Ie. could it be that my Win8 installation is missing one of those (and the fix would obviously be to install it), while my Win7 installation has it?

From the stats I've seen Win8 is still less popular than Mac OS. So no. Nothing's getting obviated any time soon. But maybe 8.1 will change that?

Any error messages?

Nothing besides some generic "Heagomenia has stopped working ... Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." This happens after the intros, right after the game has completed loading the game and displays the start menu.

I'll check the Haegomonia subforum if this is known issue there.

There has got to be a more sane way to fix that, but I don't own the game to try.

Fenixp: and I'm not running around, suggesting people with issues to install the newest release of Linux Mint.
Why not? Want to be the only one with a good, stable OS? Is that why you suggest operating systems with a lower success rate to others? Quite selfish of you not to suggest a better operating system when that may be the easiest option.

Or the OP could just stop using GOG.

I'm actually not suggesting anything, I'm just trying to help OP get the games he wants to be working on his OS to actually work on his OS. I don't care what operating systems are people using. I'm definitely not selfish enough to run around and push my preferences on them, especially since it's not the point of this topic. If he does decided to downgrade to Win7, well, more power to him, but as it is, point stands "If GOG doesn't work on Win8, I'll stop using GOG"

MrZorg: Haegemonia
...
GOG seems to say that it supports Win 8 for these games, which makes me all the more dubious.
I can't find anything where GOG says Haegemonia supports Windows 8. Can you link me?

silviucc: 1) the windows license is an OEM one. Those do not come with the downgrade option
How can Microsoft prevent you from changing your OS? Wouldn't you just have to boot from an install disc for (example) Windows XP and wipe and recreate the partition using that? Or does it specifically stop you from using older versions of Windows? In which case, you would just need to install a different OS, then install the older version of Windows.

I think he's talking about using the 8 license to install older OS.
