Aliasalpha: Do any of the virtualisation apps allow you to access the video hardware? All the ones I've tried have included only a generic display adapter thats total crap for anything other than basic desktop apps

Arkose: VirtualBox, VMware Server, and VMware Workstation have preliminary 3D support. Unfortunately, there is no GPU equivalent of the hardware-assisted virtualisation incorporated into most modern CPUs (which allows the VM to see the real CPU and access it directly at native speed); this means all instructions have to be converted before being given to the real hardware, so you should not expect usable speeds for the most demanding games. Neither implementation is feature-complete, so many games will run with problems or not at all.

Yeah thats sort of what I was suspecting. I seem to recall that vmware could capture physical hardware such as USB ports, with any luck something similar could happen with video cards. Probably still wouldn't be fast enough for modern games though.
Shame that this is only XP, a 98SE version would pretty much allow us to play anything from the dos era up to the present day. So far the only way I'm going to play Warhammer 40000 Chaos Gate is if GOG manage to get it (instant buy if so)
Okay, now I'm even more confused!
Things are far more complicated than I thought.
I haven't been able to keep up with Windows upgrades since win98.
Is there any ETA on Windows 7?
The estimated release seems to waver between 2-3 months time and early next year. I'm guessing "within the next 12 months" is probably the most realistic.
Not really worth upgrading to vista in the short term unless you want it for something like a media centre, might as well wait for 7

HertogJan: So we have to see how GOG will deal with this.
Perhaps the games will require (almost) no tweaking to run under W7 as MS has claimed that the move from Vista to W7 won't be as big as that from XP to Vista.

So far, all the GOG releases I have purchased run absolutely fine on 7. While there are some programs that don't run for various reasons, compatibility is effectively identical to Vista. I doubt GOG will need to do anything other than update the installer design to conform more closely to Microsoft's standards.

ETA I think is around August or September. The beta disc I have says it expires on 1. August ( and I don't think the official release is far behind that

Die By The Sword had the weird color glitch when I ran the 7000 build of Windows 7. It was either a combination of crappy integrated graphics and beta drivers or just a beta OS running an older game...who knows. The glitch did go away on a different computer running Vista 32 bit though..
as per gizmodo, getting xp virtualization to work will require:
• A CPU that has true chip-level virtualization from Intel or AMD.
• 2GB of RAM minimum.
• While XP Mode will be a free download for buyers of Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Enterprise, and Windows 7 Ultimate, you will need a licensed copy of Windows XP Service Pack 3.

Gizmodo is totally wrong about this; XP Mode includes a pre-installed, fully licensed XP Service Pack 3 VHD image for free. The only requirement is that you have Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate; with the Anytime Upgrade system, those with a lower version (which will usually be Home Premium, which is only one step below Professional) can upgrade cheaply and instantly to any given version to gain all its features (including XP Mode and its free XP SP3 license).

That's the beta though, before it's RTM [released to manufacturing] there'll be at least one RC [release candidate], and possibly another beta before those.
Ignore this. :P

Release candidate got released for MSDN subscribers last week and it will be open for the general public 5th May ( probably 6th of May or close to for those of us not on US timezones ).
This will also include the XP virtual mode afaik.
I've only tried a few games from my gog collection on the beta, but so far I've had no problems getting them to run.
Has anyone installed RC1 yet? I am thinking of installing it this week, but I would hate to lose the ability to play my gogs.

Should be about 12 noon PST, as with the beta.

I'll be installing it tomorrow..I'm sure we'll have lots of reports here on whether or not things are good. But running GOGs on the beta proved a great experience for me..I imagine the RC will be even better as it is pretty much the final product.
