KeitaroBaka: Old consoles were the best !

Oh they were not. Overpriced games that promised the moon and couldn't come close to matching the ugliness of the arcade games much less the box art from the packaging. Games that were overly simplistic and offered no real challenge other than twitch or die. Games that had no story or at best a story approaching the sparse wilderness of a jrpg...
Obviously these things changed gradually as the consoles got better and I absolutely adored my atari 2600 (was never a fan of the master system and hated the nes) and PS1 but give me my 360 any day.
Sure most of the games are shit but somtimes you find a gem that genuinely satisfies in terms of great gameplay, story and a certain level of uniqueness
But the N64 was one of the most legendary consoles, simply because most of its platformers hit gold!
i do! first nintendo and nintendo 64 bit

N64 was also the time when Nintendo tried to sqeeze every drop of money out of european gamers,
Well, I do agree it was expensive
I remember in Australia, the console was $199, and the games could go from $50-$90
But nowadays, you have to admit, $600 consoles and the same sort of price
But I do agree there's mor compettition, third party games, etc. that push prices down
I regrettably sold my collection of old-school consoles a while ago. Have a few left and are starting to re-aquire some. Currently...
SNES
Amiga 500 (three of the damn things!!!)
Atari ST
PS One
Love to add a NeoGeo to that, just for all the Metal Slug's!!!
Atari 2600
Intellivision
Colecovision
NES
SNES
PlayStation
N64
Got all of them brand new when they were on the market. I actually do not own any after the N64. Went PC only after that. Why? I can't really say... lol.. I just like my PC!! haha

Nice... I still have plans to get my hands on a Metal Slug arcade machine - one day!
We need more Metal Slug!!! Best 2D side scroller ever!
I didn't bother with consoles before the PS2 (and I still prefer the PC, despite owning all current gen consoles). But I do have my old C64 and Amigas (which aren't consoles at all, admittedly, though I've always used TVs for playing on them).

They may have been overpriced. That's a given.
But games were not short and didn't took 4 or 6 hours to beat ! And there was no fucking health regen (or in only a few games) and you COULD die ! There was a real challenge in those games.

The games were long because of idiotic difficulty leading to the endless grind of repeating the same section over and over until you memorised the enemy patterns and could finally avoid the bullet shower. The GOOD long games of the 8bit era were all on the C64 or similar simply because the cartridges simply lacked the space for anything complex.
There's plenty of modern games that don't have regenerating health and where it's not only possible but EASY to die. Velvet Assassin springs to mind, DAMN its easy to die in that game!

I still have (all on a display stand) a Spectrum 48k (Rubber Key Version), a PS1, N64, Dreamcast, Atari VCS and more recently a Gamecube.
Not exactly all old skool, but I'm looking to source a C64 soon to add to the collection (the greatest home computer ever).
I used to trade computer games all the time back in the day when money was harder to come by. So it's with regret I no longer have my Atari Lynx, SNES and GameGear.
