Been playing the Alcary's Complex demo for a while now....a few notable points.

1. The main character Corvallis is a "Cursor". A cursor is basically an animal who can take human form and have human emotions. However Corvallis only just found out he's a cursor, his parents have been drugging him in order to suppress his animal form.

2. Even though I haven't played for that long, I can feel myself warming to the characters already. The main character isn't at all hot headed or violent. Quite the opposite. There's a lot of banter going on and you're even rewarded with SP (Sociality Points) for talking to NPCs or investigating interesting objects.

3. SP is used to improve a characters stats. I'm not entirley sure, but it seems once you gain a certain amount of SP you can start using it to improve your stats (and then I'm guessing the tally goes back to 0 and the cycle is repeated....I'm not sure on this)

4. There is something called the "Node System". I think it has something to do with battle skills. Seemingly you can add skills to your nodes that you haven't even learned yet....not sure what the logic behind that is. Taken from the game: "A node is a self-contained unit that can represent one type of physical attack, Lingual Magic, item or special skill" So I'm guessing it's sort of like your battle command bar.

5. The combat doesn't really set my world on fire....at all. Maybe it's just early game play and I'm just being rash but a lot of my battles are spent chasing the enemy around unable to hit it because my weapon has such short range. It might also be because there isn't any music change so the fight doesn't seem as intense....

My main issues with the game so far would be the world doesn't feel very responsive from the audio side of things. Adding more sound effects and better music would do wonders in this regard. (I think that's what some of the kickstarter fund is going towards)

Some of the sprites could do with improving too, for example some of the character heads (like Corvallis) seem unusually.....squashed when they're facing left or right.

Overall even though the game has quite an old school JRPG vibe to it....it's also got a good bit of it's own flavour too. The characters are also very likeable, sometimes characters in the party will start talking while you're walking towards your destination. (the conversation is in real time so you can still move while they talk) Even though it's probably just pre determined points where they start talking it's still a nice touch.

I think it's definitely trying to do it's own thing.

Thanks for the review! I hope you understand my hesitation towards adding weeaboo games, but this looks like it can turn out to be a good game, so added!
I was just walking through a town in game and my team mate (Angela) asked me if I was hungry. I responded yes and we headed into a restaurant where Angela ordered raspberry wine and brisket served with lemon sauce for herself. Corvallis ordered Milk and Lentils for himself. Angela then started telling Corvallis off for not being more adventurous. In her words

"The waitstaff isn't going to whip us while we mop the floor. Be a little more adventurous"

It looks like a lot of effort is being put into character depth, which is really nice to see.

This is shaping up to be cool. It's a bit hard to explain, but essentially it's a toolset for creating...adventures... stories? in a game world provided by the developers. It has an eclectic mix of people supporting it, like Chris Avellone, Don Bluth or Steve Meretzky.

An article of Hope

A story that needs to be told, in my opinion.
Just saw this on IGM's twitter:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/seanpollman/kinetic-void

Looks awesome, and the goal is relatively low.
This project looks really neat, it stood out the second I saw it:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jakeparker/the-antler-boy-and-other-stories?ref=live

He's very talented.
This one seems interesting, though not really sure how many would actually use it. It basically allows many users to use the same computer at the same time, though I doubt you'll be able to play games on it (hm, maybe a few of the older gogs....). They are not funding the project, they are going for bulk sale, if their goal is reached, they will be selling them at $50 each, if it doesn't, the price will be higher. Might be useful for office use, or any other not graphic intensive job.

spindown:
Just a quick update on Nekro: I corresponded with the guy and he's willing to listen to community feedback. Here are his replies (quoted with his permission):
In the reddit post I was saying how much I agree with all the notions you just talked about. I personally hate DLC and I share your sentiment that expansion packs are the way to go. Who knows we may end up doing an expansion pack and letting all the people that signed up for DLC just download the expansion pack. The fact of the matter is we don't have a game yet. You should not take my conceptual theories and projections as a hard and fast law that is completely inflexible and never to be deviated from. It's feedback like this that makes me want to do an expansion pack instead of DLC but to be totally honest I just want to make the damn game first. I respect your decision, but I also think I might be a bit hastey since we are still so far from having to make that choice. Whatever the case Nekro will be an awesome game with or without DLC or expansion packs. I'm sorry to see you go but we'll still be here if you change your mind. :)
Yes of course quote away. Do you mind me asking what aspect of the reddit is making people hesitant? Is it just the DLC thing because I can't stress enough how not set I'm stone that plan is. I'm completely willing to work with you guys to give you what you want. :)
What I mean when I say "I don't mind paying more for a complete product" is that I would rather buy a full $60 game with everything in it available from the start. I hate day one DLC, so when I said that I was supporting your argument not contradicting it. I can see how it was misread to mean that I didn't mind paying for DLC but what I was actually saying was the exact opposite. I want expansion packs, not DLC. If we do DLC it will most likely just end up being cosmetic things. The core game will be available in the shipped product. I'm sorry if I didn't articulate my point correctly in the reddit post. :)
Apologies to the other posters, I haven't had the time to check out your recommendations yet. I'm going to catch some shut eye first (haven't slept in the last 36 hours) before doing that.

Thank you for looking into this. The reddit post sounds a bit schizophrenic to me. First he says he prefers large expansions and complete games, but then he claims that they will have to sell small DLC packs via micro-transactions in order to "stay relevant" in today's games industry. His reply to you sounds equally confusing and hasn't really made things any clearer.

I think I'm going to stay away from Nekro for now because I don't want to support the development of a game that features micro-transactions, especially because it's a crowdfunded indie game. I might buy the finished game though, depending on how it turns out.
LSL is closed out now. They got their $650k and then some.

I like it, but I don't have any money for that and I don't really have anybody to share a computer with ATM. It looks cool though.

Too many kickstarters! Can't take it any more! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Cross of the Dutchman - 15$ level was added, and you get copy of the game. I think I'll go for it.
