I don't donate to much Kickstarters myself unless:
1. It has really good backer-exclusive stuff that's cheap.
or
2. I want it to reach to reach a stretch goal that I badly want.
GTFO - a documentary on harassment of girl gamers. It allegedly has Jenny Haniver in it ;P.

What harassment? All of the gamers I know want women to play games. Well, they want their girlfriends to play games so they can share in the fun (read: so the guys don't get nagged when they are playing games), mostly, but they'd be supportive if they met a female gamer, if only because having a common hobby gives them an opportunity to break the ice.

Then again, I don't look at Facebook comments or 4Chan boards or any other place where douchebags make a habit of posting stupid stuff.
Are misogynistic comments against women who play games or are involved in gaming really so widespread that it warrants a documentary?

Behold:
The "n00dz or GTFO" panel
Fat, Ugly or Slutty
Not in the Kitchen Anymore

I know it sounds absurd but apparently people DO act hostile (or go to the other extreme) when faced with female players...

The gamers you know would, the gamers I know would, but there's a ton of harassment that goes on by random trolls that guys don't seem to have to deal with.

Okay, then.
I guess someone should tell these guys that this type of behavior is typical of little boys who still think girls have cooties, and not mature adults. I mean, the last time I remember refusing to let a girl play with me was when I was 9.

I suppose I'll pledge to that documentary, although I don't know how much good it'll do.
The only way to make people change this kind of behavior is to make them ashamed of doing it, or criminalizing it, but since they're protected by the cover of anonymity, that's kind of hard to do.

mystral: Okay, then.
And then you say two things, both of which have been discussed and discredited in the video I have linked :D !

avatar
mystral: I guess someone should tell these guys that this type of behavior is typical of little boys
"Let us address a couple of the myths that, I think, tend to come up (...); One of which is 'Oh, the only people who are really doing that are the 13yo male players' (...) We found that to be not true."
As it comes up in the discussion, kids even tend to be more polite. If we take "typical" to describe a group ACTUALLY doing this for the most part, kids are not the problem...
...and, as also pointed out, people shouldn't act this way no matter their age and we shouldn't concede it as acceptable for a particular age group.
The above is, of course, meant as clarification, not disagreement, as I know you likely had something else in mind but I felt like pointing the issue out anyway ;P.

"- (...) the next myth, which is that this only happens because people are anonymous. And the anonymity drives it... (...) there is an element of that, certainly, BUT there's also several examples that (...) anonymity had no thing to do with it, (...)
- So, did you guys hear about Cross Assault ?"

By "typical of little boys", I didn't mean to imply that this sort of behavior was restricted to young teens, but that it was really immature. As I said, the last time I refused to let girls play with me based only on the fact they were girls was when I was 9 and was still in the "girls have cooties" stage.

Again, I wasn't saying that anonymity was the only reason this happens. I know perfectly well that there are people who behave like misogynistic assholes in real life and won't have any problem insulting women in public.

What I was saying, is that typically, this kind of behavior (any kind of discriminatory behavior, not just against women) happens when the perpetrator is in a group of other like-minded people and feels bold because the group supports him/her. The best way to prevent it is to withdraw that support and make it clear that the behavior is socially unacceptable.
Unfortunately, when the perpetrator is anonymous, it's much harder to make him/her feel the consequences of socially unacceptable behavior (i.e. shunning).

Which is why even if this documentary opens the eyes of many people to the fact that discrimination against female gamers is not only widespread but unacceptable, it'll be hard to get any of the misogynistic assholes who say such things to stop.
