As said above.
I only game for the social aspect, especially when hanging about on online games :D

To escape the desperate brain dissolving tedium & depression of my real life.
Also to get good stories
My motivation is to learn and develop as a person and to entertain myself. I think all the best lessons in life are within games, and they taught me a lot within the subject of creative thinking. As an artist, I find that the theoretical side of games help and inspire me more so than any art direction.
I think its immersion which actually brings everyone to gaming, as to put it bluntly, humanity is in a constant state of suffering; ergo to remove oneself from it all is the only escape. I suppose what I'm saying is, we're stuck being human and as a race we strive to remove ourselves from our bodies as much as possible. Hence why games, films, media etc on the whole, has become more 'real' as technology improves.
Its also a way of exploring our hopes and fears. We can 'test' out ideas and concepts; which help us to understand what it really is to be human along with a load of other thought experiments.
Uh...to have fun?

Catshade: Uh...to have fun?

That's my obvious choice as well. Entertainment, and escape from boring, normal, old life.
Some tell good stories, other makes me think, and other just brings out the beast inside. Fun, satisfying, interesting.

What he said.
Even though my life isn't boring, I game for fun; this is my primary way of self-entertainment.

Interesting idea, Romulus; however, I don't think it's necessarily a sort of (even sub-conscient) escape from reality. In my opinion, it's more like people like to try out things they will NEVER be able to do in real life (in 95% of all cases, anway), but are interested in. For example, I play mostly strategy games/business and trade sims, as I'll most probably never be the leader of a nation/own a company, but I like fiddling around with such things.
An other case is that people do things which they COULD do in real life, as they have everything to do them, but don't want real-life consequences. Hence the popularity of The Sims and such other games.
Very much as an escape from reality.

Also Manhunt

Ideed, or all GTA games.
To escape from work and the bad side of life, but when I want to have more involvement than simply reading.
For entertainment or escape from reality pretty much covers it, same as why i read or watch a movie.
Plus more of my free time playing games means less time pissing my neigbours off thrasing my guitar or having to watch the cess pit that is UK televsion and no i don't or ever will own Sky.

Heh yes its a popular option but I don't drink.
It has advantages, notable amongst them is the ability to close quotes properly...
