Even though my life isn't boring, I game for fun; this is my primary way of self-entertainment.
Romulus: I think its immersion which actually brings everyone to gaming, as to put it bluntly, humanity is in a constant state of suffering; ergo to remove oneself from it all is the only escape. I suppose what I'm saying is, we're stuck being human and as a race we strive to remove ourselves from our bodies as much as possible. Hence why games, films, media etc on the whole, has become more 'real' as technology improves.
Interesting idea, Romulus; however, I don't think it's necessarily a sort of (even sub-conscient) escape from reality. In my opinion, it's more like people like to try out things they will NEVER be able to do in real life (in 95% of all cases, anway), but are interested in. For example, I play mostly strategy games/business and trade sims, as I'll most probably never be the leader of a nation/own a company, but I like fiddling around with such things.
An other case is that people do things which they COULD do in real life, as they have everything to do them, but don't want real-life consequences. Hence the popularity of The Sims and such other games.
