Easily Saints Row 2 or Mercenaries 1. Played a lot out of both and with SR2 in coop, it was even better.

My first (and favorite) sandbox game is Morrowind. The most memorable thing about it for me was my first few experiences when I started playing it- walking out of the customs office and just being struck by the sensation of "whoa, what now?" Then after spending some time getting the hang of things in Seyda Neen (completing a few quests, outfitting myself with some better gear, clearing out the cave of bandits, etc) thinking "Alright, I think I've got a good handle on this now", taking the silt strider to Balmora, then immediately seeing this massive town sprawling out before me, making Seyda Neen seem like the backwater outpost that it was. Definitely another big "Whoa, what now?" moment.

Morrowind is pretty great, you can even kill the main quest giver and completely play the game through. I spent hundreds of hours just cruising around exploring, doing quests here and there, before I even started the main quest-line, and I believe I had been playing the game for a year before I even got to the werewolf island.

It really does give you a huge sense of freedom, completely non-linear.

Whenever "sandbox game" is mentioned, I always think of the building games like SimCity, Railroad Tycoon, etc. You know, build stuff, like in a sandbox.

Until the police start to get too powerful, I'll have to go with Just Cause 2.

Saboteur

I dont really like sandbox games, I find them a bit pointless, but I like alot about Saboteur, I love the art style, the vintage car racing, blowing stuff up never gets old, the characters are well drawn too.

Mount & Blade Warband

Same here.

Nowadays for me, probably Minecraft.

In the old days, I used to play a lot with The Sims series.

A sandbox game is one where you are supposed to make your own fun. The game provides you with a lot of tools to play with, but in the end, the players enjoyment will be based on how good the player is at entertaining itself.


For me, the ultimate sandbox game is Dwarf Fortress. Not even The Sims offers you so many different ways of being a jerk to everyone of your "minions" (Yes we really did intentionally drop your kittens down a bottomless pit, what are you going to do about it? Sulk in your room?).

Although I have to stretch the definition a bit to fit the sandbox genere: Mafia

When I saw I had a whole city to explore and move at will (with a multitude of classic cars each better than the last), I was in love forever.

Varies, but probably Mount & Blade: Warband.

Just Cause 2- So much to blow up
The Saboteur- Unique by being WW2 sandbox
Fable 2- I prefer the world over in Fable 1
Morrowind- A rather unique fantasy setting
Mount and Blade Warband- Mount and Blade ftw
Mercenaries Playground of Destruction- The first sandbox game on consoles I owned
Saints Row 2- So much fun
Two Worlds 2- Game has issues but the world is awsome
