Neobr10: The fact that 67 reviews gave it a score of 80 or higher must mean something. Maybe the game is actually good? Naughty Dog certainly has already proven that they can make great games. I dare to say that Naughty Dog is currently the best first-party studio out there.
I didn't really like Uncharted, so... I dunno. Maybe someday I'll try it.

I sort of agree with you, I did not like Uncharted that much, mostly because well I feel to old for it.

Nathen Drake is too "perfect" for me, he is like the teenage american girl's dreamboy.

Worse I can't take him seriously, I treat charcters like Niko Bellic seriously, John Marston, Big Boss, Shepard, and Carl Johnson and Jak seriously, but Nathen he is to gullible and naive for me.

I just thought it was too much of a movie, and I hate analog stick shooting.

I notice you don't like cutscenes because they make games look too much like movies, even though I think they help with the story-telling.

Grargar: Yeah, I read this comparison too. It's a stupid one, mainly because Citizen Kane was not wildly applauded when it was first released. It took 15 years for that to happen.

The question to ask is: Will people keep on praising the Last of Us on 2028? If yes, then perhaps it deserves all that praise. If not, which I suspect is the case, then it was nothing more than a serious case of the Hype Train. (When 2/3 of the pre-release reviews have perfect 10s, you can't help but raise an eyebrow.)
Yeah if anything we should be using the phrase," The Godfather of Videogames" the Godfather was praised when it released, and it still holds 100 on metacritic.

And to me Metroid Prime is the Godfather of the Sci Fi games.

Or it could be a case of Sonic Adventure. You know, the game that everyone praised when it was first released but slammed it when it was rerelased some years later on other consoles.

My point still stands. If a game is classic, there will be demand for it many years later and we can't know this till the years pass.

SirEyeball: Because to be truly great it needs to be good both for console and computer. If it is good for console or pc only it misses a whole audience group. True greats in film or other arts hits across the board regardless of what genre the viewer/listener is partial to. True there will always be negative critics but here the majority rules.
That doesn't even make sense on the surface. Is great literature only great once it's been translated? No, of course not. Are films only great if they're released on Blu-Ray, DVD, VHS, and Betamax? That's absurd.

If you want to define a great game as "a game that exists on as many platforms as possible" then you'd have to give, say that old Atari game E.T. a similar score to Planescape: Torment , and that's just utter crap.

I am not saying that as many platforms as possible equals a great game but I am saying that a game that only caters to people who likes contollers or mouse leaves the other half unsatisfied and that is not the marking of a great game it can still be good. It should be able to transcend the 2 and still be a damn good game at that to be one of the truly greats. of the old games before controllers the ones that had multiple platforms is also among the good old greats.

I'm pretty sure it will be forgotten after a year.
I love how everyone is saying how they want it for the post-apoc setting, the graphics, when they really want it for the 14-year old girl companion in all those high-res textures

So Fallout and Bauldur's Gate are not "truly great" games just because they were exclusive to the PC? Talk about nonsense.

Some games have aged well, others haven't. It depends on the game, really. Also the port for Sonic Adventures sucks, it doesn't even run in widescreen. They criticized it more because of how lame that port was than because of the game itself.

I disagree. I think Ultima is a classic even though the first ones haven't aged well by any means.

Fallout and BGare earlier games where the possibilities where different and they are great games of the time same as Citizen Kane is a great Black and White film because the media was different. The gaming world has changed and a potential great game could be played only by a marginal amount of players because it is limited to one type of machine thus limiting how great it can become in the minds of people who never tries it. Citizen Kane is only great because people have watched it.

Is there at least one console franchise that you don't hate? I mean, seriously, you always say the same thing about every console game, be it on Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony.

So what? Still doesn't make any sense. A game is a classic regardless of which platform it's on or how many people played it. Psychonauts is a great game in my opinion and almost no one played it. The amount of people who tried or had the opportunity to try the game doesn't change the fact that it was a great game.

And please stop comparing the movie and the gaming industry.

isn't that what the op started by saying which game is the "Citizen Kane"? The difference is that the greats are known and loved by many. If only a few know and love a potential great game it is only a good game(It will be great in the minds of the few who know it but not beyond.) The word great might have been used so much it has been devalued but not for me.
